Holly Roberts Art
American, b. 1951
Holly Roberts (b. 1951, Colorado) is a contemporary artist known for her collages combining photographs and paint. Inspired by her lifelong experience living in the Southwest, her compositions often incorporate the colors, wildlife, vegetation, and myths of desert and mountain landscapes.
Roberts earned a BFA from the University of New Mexico and an MFA from Arizona State University, Tempe. Her work is nationally and internationally exhibited and has been published in four monographs. The artist has been honored with the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship twice, and is collected by institutions nationwide, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bayly Museum of Art (Charlottesville). A dedicated teacher as well as a prolific artist, she has had a profound effect on a community of artists around the country. "Sad Woman/Distant Man" illustrates Holly Roberts' shift from over-painting photographs to constructing photo-based images on top of abstract paintings. By combining the precision of photography with the expression of painting, Roberts marries objectivity with subjectivity, thus paralleling the dichotomy of human experience.
Like much of Roberts' contemporary work, "Sad Woman/Distant Man" is a psychoanalytic interpretation of human experience, particularly unrequited love—A woman stares longingly at a disinterested man. The couple is composed of photographs of appendages both modern and medieval in execution, alluding to the immutability of unrequited love as a motif in art and literature. About an Artist:
Irena Orlov is a Los Angeles-based contemporary multidisciplinary visual artist whose work uses a combination of both traditional and new media. In a blending of traditional and new media, Irena Orlov developed special techniques which continue to give her art a unique look and aesthetic. While the majority of her works are done with mixed media, she also creates with acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolors and pencil.
Much of her art has been implemented in renowned hotels, wellness and corporate settings across the world.
