Samuel & Nathaniel Buck Art

British, 1696-1779
Samuel Buck (1696 – 17 August 1779) and his brother Nathaniel Buck (died 1759/1774) were English engravers and printmakers, best known for their "Buck's Antiquities", depictions of ancient castles and monasteries. Samuel produced much work on his own but when the brothers worked together, they were usually known as the Buck Brothers. More is known about Samuel than Nathaniel. Samuel Buck was born in Yorkshire in 1696. After publishing some prints in that county he moved to London. With Nathaniel he embarked on making a number of series of prints of "antiquities", which consisted of ancient castles and former religious buildings in England and Wales. Starting in 1724, they travelled around these countries, and completed sets of prints for the regions of England by 1738 and for Wales between 1739 and 1742. These are commonly known as "Buck's Antiquities". During this time they also worked on a series of townscapes in England and Wales entitled "Cities, Sea-ports and Capital Towns", often providing prospects from multiple directions. Nathaniel was the first to die, sometime between 1759 and 1774. Samuel died on 17 August 1779 in London and was buried in the churchyard of St. Clement Danes. Samuel's later years were spent in poverty.

Samuel Buck (1696-1779) & Nathaniel Buck (active 1724-59) Panorama of the River Thames from Westminster Bridge to London Bridge Published September 1749 30x404cm Engraving Samuel & Nathaniel were brothers, best known for their depictions of ancient castles and monasteries entitled 'Buck's Antiquities' and those of townscapes of England and Wales, 'Sea-Ports and Capital Towns'. LIttle is known about the brothers' lives. Samuel was born in Yorkshire and died in penury in London in 1779, he was buried in the churchyard of St Clement Danes. Nathaniel pre-deceased him, dying between 1759 and 1774. This panorama is a fascinating insight into a long-lost, but strangely familiar, London. To the left is Westminster Bridge, framing the picture and to the right London Bridge completes the frame. A detailed key identifies 140 buildings and other features. Amongst the more recognisable items are Westminster Abbey, Horse Ferry (which is, indeed, a ferry for taking horses across the river with their carts and carriages), but presuamably somewhat redundant with the new (1750) bridge that coincides with the publishing of this print, the huge stack of used straw...

View of Pisaro, Italy: A 16th Century Hand-colored Map by Braun & Hogenberg
By Franz Hogenberg
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 16th century original hand-colored copperplate engraved map of View of Pezaro (Pisaro), Italy entitled "Pisaurum vulgo Pezaro" by Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg, from their famous city atlas "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", published in Augsberg, Germany in 1575. The map depicts a view of Pesaro, Italy from the west looking over the town to the Adriatic Sea. The River Foglia flows into the Adriatic in the foreground. The only identifiable building is the cathedral of San Domenico, which rises above the other roofs with its tall spire. Two women, dressed in styles of the 16th century are in conversation on a hill in the foreground on the left. Pesaro is in the province of Pesaro and Urbino and lies on the Adriatic and east of Florence. The city, which was founded by the Etruscans and named Pisaurum by the Romans, belonged from AD 754 onwards to the Papal States, and after 1285 was controlled by the princely families of Malatesta, Sforza and della Rovere. Today it is the capital of the province of Pesaro and Urbino and has a population of about 92,000. Pesaro's most famous resident, composer Gioacchino Rossini, was born here in 1792. The following is an English translation of an excerpt from Braun's description of the city: "We believe that the astonishingly short life of the inhabitants of Pesaro comes not only from the insalubrious air, but also from the great quantity of delectable and delicious fruits which they consume to excess. For this causes the production in their bodies of evil humours, which then lead to incurably fatal diseases. The area around the city is most charming and well planted with vineyards, fig trees, olive trees and other fruit-bearing trees."
