Matisse's Persian Woman - Sculptural Ode to Henri Matisse in Hand Built Ceramic
By Sandy Kaplan
Located in Chicago, IL
Henri Matisse collected Persian carpets, Arab embroideries and African wall hangings throughout his life, his studio becoming a treasure trove of exotic and vibrant pattern. The collection was practical — it was the impetus for various works with voluptuous women surrounded by rich textures and patterns. Sandy Kaplan takes Matisse's work to a three-dimensional level in her ceramic piece simply titled "Matisse's Persian Woman".

Lichtenstein's OHH. .ALRIGHT - Pop Art Ode to Roy Lichtenstein Ceramic Sculpture
By Sandy Kaplan
Located in Chicago, IL
Roy Lichtenstein's works were often inspired by comic characters. They were angsty women, often appearing to be in distress. In this particular work, a beautiful, fraught woman with a furrowed brow grasps a telephone in both hands as she says "Ohh ... Alright ..." Lichtenstein lets us imagine the back story - and what might happen next. Kaplan's sculpture is a direct reference to this Lictenstein's iconic pop art painting of 1964.

Warhol's Beauties - Andy Atop Portraits of Taylor, Garland, Monroe, and Kennedy
By Sandy Kaplan
Located in Chicago, IL
Iconic Andy Warhol is America looking back at itself, with a nod and a wink, taking art, in the age of mass reproduction, to the next level. Because there is something otherworldly about celebrities like Liz and Marilyn, Warhol always presented his beauties as society saw them - perfectly. Sandy Kaplan plays to Warhol's ingenuity with "Warhol's Beauties" in which a bust of Warhol sits atop a column highlighting four iconic Warhol women - Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Jackie Kennedy - as well as self portraits of the artist, all in ceramic.
