About the Item
A very charming, lovely decorated Vienna mantel clock signed J Straub in Wien.
The lovely, detailed guilded bronzes are of a very high quality. Under the beautiful signed guilded dial, two charming angels carrying a wreath.
The ‘grande sonnierie 30 hour striking’ movement on gongs. The movement with ‘silk thread’ suspension. On the right side a small pull rope to repeat the quarter hours and hours.
The well figured mahogany case, on guilded claw feet.
The guilded signed dial with Roman numbers and typical steel Vienna hands.

The theme of this amazing decorative object is the philosopher Horatius sitting on the ruins of Rome, including a fallen column and a horses head. He was a very important Roman philosopher. He sits on a square block which is a clock, signed by Robin Aine the elder, clockmaker to the king. The eight day ‘on count wheel’ striking movement with ‘silk thread’ suspension. Robert Robin (1742-1799) was enrolled as a master-watchmaker on 28 November 1767.
