Installation 21.18, Six Piece Framed Ceramic Sculpture by Nicholas Lees
About the Item
A six piece framed ceramic installation by acclaimed British ceramicist Nicholas Lees. The piece consists of six individually hand thrown and hand turned sculptures in parian porcelain, grey parian porcelain, bone china and black porcelain. These are presented in a painted white fibreboard wall mounted box frame.
In general Nicholas’ work attempts to manifest qualities of shadows as representations of the hinterland between 2 and 3 dimensions and between presence and absence, making a material penumbra. These ideas have been informed by a lifetime of visiting and looking at the same stretch of Scottish coastline, bringing the realisation that the constant shift of tide, water and light mean the experience of perception is forever transient.
Nicholas’ work has been exhibited widely in the UK and overseas and is held in private and public collections including: Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, York City Art Gallery, York, Keramikmuseum Westerwald, Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany, Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, Faenza, Italy. Auckland Museum, Auckland, New Zealand.
Nicholas has won several awards including the Cersaie Prize at the Premio Faenza (Italy) in 2015, the National Sculpture Award at the Bluecoat Display Centre in Liverpool in 2010 and the Desmond Preston Prize for Excellence in Drawing at the RCA in 2012.
