Framed Porcelain ceramic 'Excavation' by Taylor Kibby
About the Item
This wall sculpture balances the strength and delicacy of its materiality through the texture of the broken and whole ceramic links. These works are assembled from the collected ruins of previous work--they hold the history of the artists making process and reveal secret moments of material exploration. Each corner of the work is completely unique. As the artist gathers the ruins into a new whole she uses the action to find a space of meditation and deep contemplation of the space she and the work are both negotiating. The artist and work of art move in a dance of making that continues through installation. A large draw of Kibby's practice is the focus on tactile works of art that invite the viewer to join in exploration and discovery of something that is seemingly simple.

Taylor Kibby
Taylor Kibby lives and works in Los Angeles,CA. Coming from a culinary background, Taylor Kibby uses the knowledge and discipline of working with her hands as the foundation of her practice. Aligning with ideas centered on the blurring of lines between craft and fine art, Taylor Kibby makes work centered on experience and awareness. Through rigorous application of technique and the subsequent surrender to an unravelling of structure, she seeks to explore ideas of narrative in connection with the way objects share space and embody identity. The context of her work is deeply influenced by tactile making, thinking, and learning. In 2018 she received her Master of Fine Art in Applied Craft and Design from a joint program between Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, OR. Deeply influenced by the sun drenched vistas of her Southern California childhood, Taylor's work is a blend of high style, the sensual, and the slightly strange. Inspired by traditional chainmail construction and tapestry, Kibby works by creating a flexible system and then subjecting the sculpture to both predictable and unpredictable change. This experimentation creates unique movement and one-of-a kind objects.
