Upholstered Beech Three-Seat Sofa by Alfred Christensen, Denmark 1950's

About the Item

This elegant upholstered beech sofa was crafted by renowned furniture maker Alfred Christensen in the 1950s. This piece embodies the essence of Mid-Century Modernism, seamlessly blending smooth lines, warm beech wood, and inviting green upholstery. The inviting green fabric upholstery adds a touch of mid-century flair, while remaining versatile enough to complement a variety of color palettes. The beech wood frame showcases the beauty of natural materials and Danish woodworking expertise. This moderately sized sofa offers ample seating for three, making it the ideal size for fitting into an existing furnished room. The inviting fabric and plush cushioning ensure exceptional comfort, while the smooth silhouette and uncluttered design contribute to a sense of spaciousness. Delicate button tufting on the backrest can add a touch of visual interest and textural variation. This piece has been newly upholstered in a way that maintains its vintage integrity, giving it a breath of fresh life and preparing it for several more years of enjoyment and use.

  • Alfred Christensen Three-Seater Sofa for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1940s
    By Alfred Christensen
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present sofa in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this. This sofa has the characteristic ‘open armrest’ design that showcases the high level craftsmanship and the beautiful walnut structure as well. Clean and pure lines define this model that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this three-seater sofa has an elegant but still warm look thanks to its rounded edges and open execution. The only form of ornamentation - apart from the bent armrests - is the button tufting on the back. The light colour of the textural upholstery in combination with the dark walnut legs create an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space. While Danish designers, including Alfred Christensen, had many principles, above all, all designers...
