Jaques Adnet large French Sideboard 1940's Maple and Leather
About the Item
This exceptionally large and excellently crafted sideboard from France dates from around 1940 and is attributed to the French star designer Jaques Adnet (1900-1984).
Although some other well-known designers such as Jean-Michel Frank, André Groult, Jean Pascaud, Maxim Old and others also work with leather or parchment, none of them have done it so explicitly as Adnet. He experimented with leather on furniture and was at the same time committed to the modernist zeitgeist. Without being a member of the UAM (Union des Artistes Modernes), he was strongly influenced by founding member Robert Mallet Stevens and belonged to the avant-garde of French furniture designers. From the 1930s to the end of the 1950s, Jaques Adnet was a senior member of the CAF (Companie des Arts Francais), where he worked with Francois Jourdain, Serge Mouille, George Jouve and many other designers.
This design of this impressive sideboard plays with the two materials: dyed leather as a flat background and light flamed maple. The front of the furniture is divided into three parts: the two striped outer doors can be folded outwards by 180 degrees, the middle section and cover plate are furnished with fine maple. Inside, the furniture is completely veneered with mahogany; Behind the right door there are well-made, hand-galvanized drawers. There are two large leather-veneered sliding trays integrated to the top of the sideboard.
The unique design, the quality of craftsmanship and the enormous size suggest that it was as a special commissioned work. The piece of furniture is in lovely original condition. It was auctioned in Paris in the 1980s and remained in private collection since then.
