Made for Maharajas A Design Diary of Princely India By Amin Jaffer Hardcover
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Made for Maharajas A Design Diary of Princely India By Amin Jaffer and Martand Singh.Large hardcover coffee table book 2006.Great condition.Brings together a range of works made for Indian princes by western artistsIndian royalty's passion for western luxury goods reached its peak at the height of the British Raj (1857-1947) as Indian rulers traveled to Europe and began to model their lives along western lines. Commissioning architects to design palaces in modern or historic styles, purchasing fleets of cars, and ordering their family jewels to be reset by the most skilled European goldsmiths, Indian princes established themselves as the new creative patrons of European high design.Based equally in the archives of firms such as Louis Vuitton, Boucheron, Chaumet and Hermès, and in palace and private collections, this book explores the role of maharajas in an age of high spending and fashion. It brings together original designs with surviving objects, exploring for the first time the creative dialogue between Indian princes and the skilled tradesmen who produced wonders for their delectation. Married to the objects themselves are the absorbing and often humourous accounts of how maharajas indulged their tastes with unparalleled extravagance and aplomb. Made for Maharajas book by Amin Jaffer. The Indian princes of the British Raj lived lives of unparalleled opulence and luxury. Made for Maharajas returns readers to that resplendent era, presenting a selection of one-of-a-kind objects crafted to order by the outstanding European luxury goods manufacturers, fashion houses, and decorators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here are the custom-designed cars, jewelry, and extraordinary objéts d’art commissioned by maharajas, nawabs, nizams, and sultans from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, Harry Winston, and others, accompanied by anecdotes that illuminate this sumptuous way of life. Many of the illustrations in this book have never been previously reproduced outside of India, making this not only the first volume of its kind, but a remarkable keepsake that may never be duplicated in our lifetime. This volume explores the role of maharajas in this age of high spending and fashion. It brings together original designs with surviving objects, exploring for the first time the creative dialogue between Indian princes and the skilled tradesmen who produced wonders for their delectation. Amin Jaffer is a curator in the department of Asian Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where he specializes in Indian art in the age of European influence. Jaffer lectures frequently in Europe, America, and India and contributes regularly to journals and newspapers. Magnificent Sinhalese Portuguese Kastane Rhino Ceremonial Ceylon Sword 17th C
Located in London, GB
A magnificent 17th century Ceremonial Sri Lankan Kastane sword with Rhino handle and gold and silver Portuguese inlayed blade. A kasthane is a short traditional ceremonial or decorative single-edged Sri Lankan sword. The sword is featured in the Flag of Sri Lanka. The main aspect of this Kastane Hilts shows the central monster accompanied by supporting minor iconic forms and the peculiar guard arrangement incorporating Buddhist style Vajra quillons. The scabbard of this Kastane sword is made of Rhino horn and is decorated with brass, silver and gold. It is a testament to the skill of the traditional craftsmen operating in Sri Lankas ancient Royal Sword Workshops. The sword measures 75cm in length The Dutch East India Company (VOC or Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie in Dutch) regularly gifted swords to the Kandyan court as part of their strategy to protect their trading privileges. Many of these swords had the traditional Sinhalese decoration but with VOC-marked blades. From 1467 to 1818, Kandy was an independent kingdom in Ceylon—present-day Sri Lanka. In the 18th century, the Kingdom of Kandy was recognized for its outstanding metalwork and craftsmanship. Unfortunately, their fine metalworking came to an end when Kandy fell under British rule in the early 19th century. The kasthane served as symbols of rank and office, presented by the king to noblemen and local chieftains. The silver-mounted kasthane was reserved for the Adigar, the highest officials or feudal lords who also acted as ministers and governors. It also served as a diplomatic gift from the court to European visitors. It was a Sri Lankan tradition to wear the kasthane as a symbol of rank to mark ceremonial occasions. However, the sword type, with an animal-decorated hilt and curved blade, was of European origin. It has its roots in the European hunting swords...

Indian Mughal Inspired Brass Wall Hanging, 20th Century
Located in Islamabad, PK
Visualize a captivating brass wall hanging from the 20th century, a masterpiece that intricately captures the essence of Mughal art and history. This large, hammered brass creation serves as both a work of art and a historical narrative, transporting observers to the opulent world of Mughal India. The brass wall hanging is generously sized, with a surface that gleams in the warm, golden hues characteristic of polished brass. Its weighty presence adds a sense of grandeur to any space, and the hammered texture across the entire piece adds depth and dimension to the artwork. Upon closer inspection, the surface of the brass wall hanging reveals a finely detailed Mughal scene. The artisan has skillfully hammered the brass to create a rich tapestry of imagery, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of Mughal life. The scene might include depictions of Mughal emperors and empresses, courtiers engaged in conversation, musicians playing traditional instruments, and gracefully adorned elephants parading through lush gardens. The meticulous craftsmanship extends to the fine details of clothing, jewelry, and architectural elements. The hammered technique imparts a textured quality to the figures and structures, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that adds to the visual richness of the piece. The central focus of the brass wall hanging might be a magnificent Mughal palace or a serene garden, both rendered with precision and artistic flair. The scene is framed by intricate borders featuring geometric patterns and floral motifs, showcasing the artisan's dedication to both historical accuracy and aesthetic beauty. As a whole, this brass wall hanging stands...

Kashmiri Mughal Bird Copper Ewer, Mid 19th Century
Located in Islamabad, PK
This exquisite piece of art seamlessly combines the intricate aesthetics of Mughal design with the skilled craftsmanship of Kashmiri artisans, resulting in a stunning and unique creation. The copper ewer takes the form of a bird, with its body forming the main body of the vessel and its neck serving as the spout. The bird's wings, tail feathers, and even subtle details like beak and eyes are meticulously rendered, showcasing the artisan's attention to detail. The entire form of the ewer is fluid and elegant, capturing the essence of avian grace. The surface of the copper ewer is adorned with elaborate Mughal-inspired engravings and embellishments. Floral patterns, intricate vines, and delicate geometric designs cover the bird-shaped body, creating a visually rich tapestry of artistry. The Mughal influence is evident in the precision of the decorative elements, reflecting the era's emphasis on fine craftsmanship and aesthetic sophistication. The handle of the ewer, perhaps formed as a continuation of the bird's body or as a separate element, is designed for both functionality and artistic harmony. It complements the overall form, allowing for easy pouring while maintaining the cohesive avian aesthetic. Such a Bird-shaped Kashmiri Mughal Copper...
