ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

A Silver Hanukkah Lamp , Germany Circa 1930
Located in New York, NY
A Unique Silver Arts and Crafts Hanukkah Lamp, made in Germany Circa 1930. This Hanukkah Lamp is truly unique and has a few different styles of craftmanship and designs that make up its structure. Seemingly this menorah looks to be made for children. The shaft and the base are remarkably executed. the light hammering on the base referenced the Arts and Crafts movement while the shaft is designed in an Art Deco fashion. However, the cut-out pattern of the palm leaves and the engraved Stars of David are of a lower standard; the engraving in particular is sloppy and crude. Yet the cups and the finial and the small bells at the end of the leaves are well done- the balls cite the influence of the Secession, yet another art trend. Whatever may be for the apparent contradiction in the quality of workmanship, this is an interesting Rarity. Hallmarked and signed at the bottom of the hammered base. Literature taken from Tzadik Kaplans Book: Jewish Antiques...

Antique Arts & Crafts Copper & Silk Chandelier Winkelman & Van Der Bijl Style
Located in Lisse, NL
This striking and rare, 13-light chandelier has an amazing look and feel. If you live or work in an Arts and Crafts or in an Art Deco building/interior and you are looking for a matching fixture to grace your living or work space then this very rare and all handcrafted, copper and silk chandelier could be flying your way soon. We have sold a large number of antique light fixtures around the globe, but when it comes to chandeliers from the Dutch Arts & Crafts era this sizable and relatively timeless specimen is only one of very few that we have been able to find. The design is both beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, because the combination of the copper hardware and the goldenbrown silk shade is an absolute joy to look at. Because of the quality of the copper Arts and Crafts Style elements and the relatively timeless design we feel this rare antique may have been made by Winkelman en van der Bijl (of Amsterdam), but we have no way to prove that. The excellent condition, double layered silk inside this pendant's shade is an expensive replacement and it creates the most amazing warm light that we have ever seen. It creates a unique atmosphere, one that will make your room look exactly like what an original Arts & Crafts room...
