19th Century Collectible Maple or Walnut Hand-Carved Table with Scalloped Rim

About the Item

The absolute attraction of this table is the intricate carving on the top, which includes a centerpiece portrait of a gentleman wearing a period hat, and his image is surrounded by hand-carved flowers. It is collectible and functional. It is described by appraisers as an Aesthetic Movement Inlaid Maple or Walnut Serpentine-Top Stand in the Orientalist taste, American or English, from the late 19th Century. The top's shape is octagonal with serpentine sides that are heavily inlaid centering a sultan's portrait surrounded by relief-carved foliate decoration, raised on a single pedestal on a triangular base. The wood patina is gorgeous. The appraisers say this is the portrait of a sultan, but it seems to also resemble the image, hat and clothing of a Spanish Conquistador. The table rests on a trangular base that is made of modern plywood and seems to add stability to the piece. The carving and portrait are protected by a glass top. The table is 23 inches tall, and the top is 19 by 14 inches.

The stunning appearance of the rosettes that are hand carved into the panel are amazing. The panel seem like it was part of a larger architectural setting and the appraiser wonders if it might have been part of a confessional, although the holes may be a little to large for that. • 19th Century Corner Chair American or English
    Located in Lomita, CA
The cherub upholstery fabric of this antique corner chair will bring a smile to your face, but the piece deserves a deeper look. It has a secret.: The chair has a "second skin," in a tweed upholstery that someone was reluctant to remove. The cherub upholstery on the armrest of the chair is actually a shawl or drape for the for the chair. It is Victorian, carved and turned walnut on a part-upholstered corner armchair that is English or American from the late 19th Century according to our appraiser. The seat is triangular with a rounded front rail, that is backed by two low arms with raised upholstery. The curved seat rail has a long fringe trim, all raised on four cylindrical bead turned legs on casters. The detachable fabric drape or shawl is priceless. Appraisers beleive this could have possibly been half of a two-piece tete-a-tete chair...
