Vintage Oval Mahogany Butler's Coffee Tray Table in Georgian-style, Circa 1960s
Located in Roma, IT
Passionate about Campaign Furnitures and travel items, we didn't miss this Butler's coffee table when we saw it on one of our client's boats moored along the Riviera D'Ulisse.
It wasn't exactly in good condition but the charm of this item was evident despite the years spent at sea.
Being made mostly of solid mahogany wood, our trusted restorer succeeded in the task of making this piece shine again.
The heart of this vintage coffee table is rectangular, covered in mahogany veneer paneling.
Semicircular panels in solid mahogany wood are fixed to each of the 4 sides of this rectangle with massive brass hinges, which can be raised to transform the top of this coffee table into a large tray.
The tray has two lockable perforated handles on the sides, which allows you to lift it from the base, also made of solid mahogany wood, and move it elsewhere.
The measurements of the coffee table with the sides closed are as follows:
Width 90cm
Height 62cm
Depth 59cm
The measurements of the coffee table with the top extended:
Width 121cm
Depth 90cm
Height 48.5 cm
As mentioned, this Butler's Boat Coffee Table...

Small Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray on Stand
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Good Quality And Unusually Small Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray, Of Diminutive Proportion, Having Elegant Shaped Sides With Pierced Carrying Handles And Well Figured Top, Housed On Later Square Chamfered Leg Mahogany Stand.
During the 18th and 19th centuries a coffee table was not what we regard as a coffee table in the 21st century. Coffee tables back then were always full height, effectively side tables. The modern, low, coffee table is really something which began to be seen during the early 20th century onwards.
Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times.
Therefore it is now incredibly common to find 18th and 19th century trays of varying shape, size and design utilised as coffee tables. As with all the others that we have seen this particular tray has been fitted onto a low, practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. It’s worth noting that generally this means an old broken table...

Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray on Stand

A good quality George III period mahogany oval butlers tray of panelled construction, having original brass hinges and pierced handles to folding sides, housed on later square leg mahogany stand.

Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times.
Therefore as is now normal with by far the majority of these butlers trays which we see, due to the fact they make absolutely perfect coffee tables, this has been removed from its original, tall, folding stand at some point and fitted onto a lower, more practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood.
