About the Item

A fine small oil study of a Buddha in Japan by American artist Lilla Cabot Perry (1848-1933). Perry was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and went on to become a founder and first Secretary of the Guild of Boston Artists. She had the opportunity to live next door to Claude Monet in Giverny, France for ten years, who encouraged her impressionist style, which she brought back to Boston, lecturing on Monet and his impressionist style to the Boston Art Students Association. Perry was a key person in bringing French Impressionism to the United States. She also spent time in Tokyo, Japan, where she completed over 80 paintings. Oil on canvas, unsigned, artist placard lower center, titled on multiple verso labels “Study of a Statue of Buddha, Japan” including Sotheby’s, Hirschl & Adler (NY), Terra Museum of American Art (Chicago), and Berry-Hill Galleries (NY), and housed in a period molded giltwood frame.
