About the Item

This wonderful seaport painting is by Jan Simon Knikker Jr. (Dutch, 1911–1990). Knikker was a prolific painter of the Hague school. Judging by the subject and age of the canvas this wonderful depiction of an industrial dutch port is from the 1960's. Signed lower right. Condition is good. Oil on canvas. Overall framed measurements are 23 by 27 inches. Provenance: A upstate, New York collector. Biography artist Jan Simon Knikker (Leiden 1911 – The Hague 1990), known as Jan, was born in Leiden in 1911. He lived and worked in Wassenaar, after that in Voorschoten until 1937 and then in The Hague. Signed with Jan Knikker jr. Son or Jan Simon Knikker sr. He was a student at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague (1928-1932) and of his father Jan Knikker Sr. He painted summer, river and winter landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes in a figurative way in the style of the Hague School. He is therefore seen as a follower of the Hague School and he worked a lot for art dealers. Abroad his cityscapes are particularly sought after. Although the Knikker family of painters and in particular Jan Knikker senior (Oude Jan) and Aris Knikker came from North Holland, the old and young Jan Knikker have become real Hague painters. Jan Knikker senior (Oude Jan), settled in The Hague around the turn of the century, where Jan Knikker junior was born in 1911 at De La Reykade, now La Reyweg. At the time, it was located on the outskirts of the city with a wide view of the landscape beyond. On this location, Oude Jan and junior could gain unlimited inspiration from their home to record their impressions of the great outdoors on linen. In their own words, modesty was foreign to them, Oude Jan and junior represented the well-known Hague School of Maris, Bosboom and Roelofs. That is why Jan Knikker junior stated in a newspaper interview that they focused on landscapes and cityscapes.

  • "Serene Sail"
    By Warren W. Sheppard
    Located in Southampton, NY
This oil on canvas painting was done by the American artist, Warren Sheppard. Signed twice lower left. One signature over another. See signatures photo's. Circa 1920 to 1930. Recently lightly cleaned and gold leaf frame custom made for the painting. Overall 27 by 37 inches. Some craquelure; mainly in sky. Otherwise, good condition. A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races. Twice he was to command Tamerlane when it won the New York to Bermuda run. His book, Practical Navigation, was used for many years by the United States Naval Academy...

One of the foremost painters of the Post-Impressionist period, Laugé’s works are beloved for his sensitivity to light, shade and tone, and his mastery of medium is clearly on display in Almond Trees...
