Cloudy Day Marsh Grass II (hand-printed botanical cyanotype, 24 x 18 inches)

2024

About the Item

Unframed. Although this looks like a screen print or woodcut, it is actually a form of 19th-century lensless photography. The normal color of a cyanotype (blueprint) is dark blue and white. However, this greenish gray cyanotype was made by altering the ratio of the two chemicals which comprise the photosensitive solution before brushing it on the paper. This monotype was made with fresh-cut Native Californian wild grass from the artist's own garden. The species of tall marsh grass is called Gray Rush or the latin name juncus patens. It is native to Northern California and grows in local wetlands. If not cut back, it it would grow over 4 feet tall. Each blade of grass was laid in that position by hand. There was no camera nor photo negative. It is a precise and slow-going process composing a picture with hundreds of solid objects, balancing the positive and negative space to not have large patches of white, pinning them under glass, and capturing their silhouette with sunlight. Every one of the artist's botanical cyanotypes is an entirely unique monotype as the freshly cut plants are laid in that one exact composition only once before they wilt. There is no copper plate, no ink nor printing press. SHIPPING: Free regular ground shipping to United States.

Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun. Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading. What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...
