Compelling set of 7 etchings from an exciting new talent, Indian Artist Sonal Varshneya Ojha. The 7 works come from a series of 25 works, Edition 4/7. The full Edition is available on our 1stDibs store. Editions 1, 2 & 3 have already sold, Edition 2 has been purchased by a Museum Collection in Belgium. Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same.
The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed from the older generations to the younger women. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels.
In Sonal's own words,
'Some works are very close to heart like this work whenever me and my dear mother used to go to the market, mother's purse was always lost and when we used to find it, it was hidden in mother's armpit saree and my favorite sentence is "Mummy". You can't lose your purse, you won't leave it. Mother used to go out for the market, she used to get Susu and often this happened in front of grandmother's house, we used to stop and open the blue shutter of grandmother's house, then mother's eyes were very relaxed. Now I think, then mother used to go to talk to grandmother on the pretext of Susu, she used to get "aaj ki taza khabar".Mummy got me a tiffin and told me to take it now, then take more later and then that day never came. Mother had a habit of never saying no to anything, even if it was a small one, she would certainly give it.
My mother was very fond of films. And Harish remains very upset with me because of this fact that I am also there. When mummy was in twelfth standard she had n c c then she went to kashmir and Rajesh Khanna's film was being shot there mummy loved to make portraits so sitting there she prepared some portraits and during the shooting of the film she got Rajesh Khanna's portraits. also got autograph And mom was overjoyed, and as they do in movies, someone stole her autograph diary. What was it then, only memories were left with the mother, which she used to tell us often. Mother had a habit of never saying no to anything, even if it was a small one, she would certainly give it.
On the wedding day, many people understand the bridegroom in different ways. You do like this, and the milkmaid would have been in tension, walking like a lion and everyone would have stared at her, and the milkmaid would have been the king of marriage, her chest would have been to walk. All the ornaments that my mother has are very beautiful, they were made by my maternal grandfather from Jaipur, today it will be a bit difficult to get them, but the workmanship in the ornaments is really very beautiful.
Some boys are very choosy, if you go shopping with them, then they bother you. If we say what are boys, whatever they wear, they look good and get ready quickly, but I have done this work in my house. I have never seen boys who have small or thin shoulders taking overcoats and if they ever get a coat of their size, they would be so happy as if a wish has been answered.
The feeling of the first time is very unique and it happens to everyone, when we washed small clothes and dried them on the stand, then I felt something different and I was feeling happy in my heart. Colored clothes. The biggest talking point in the house is these clothes from Nani's side and these clothes came from Dadi's side.
When you are in trouble, you forget where you are, what you are wearing, whether someone is watching you or not, you do not remember anything. Something similar happened with me, I wore the kurta upside down in the whole function and I didn't even know because I was in trouble, when I remembered it was too late and someone told me something interesting or didn't even interrupt, maybe all today They have become so busy in themselves that they do not care about anyone. Or today's fashion separates everyone.'

Sonal Varshneya Ojha
Sonal Varshneya Ojha is an exciting young artist from India. Born in 1985 in Agra, she now works from a studio in Lucknow. With a Masters Degree in the Visual Arts from Agra University, Sonal’s work has been shown at major International Art Fairs such as the last Edition of the India Art Fair in 2020 in New Delhi. The artist will be exhibiting at the forthcoming India Art Fair in April 2022. She has enjoyed success with major Galleries worldwide and at the beginning of 2022 she was selected for the CIMA Emerging Art Awards. Sonal is a storyteller. Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Sonal’s is a very specific language, one which merges pop culture with traditional imagery. However there is nothing parochial about the artist’s work which places these local tales into her understanding of society at large and within a global context. Sonal Varshneya Ojha’s work is in many important collections. The artist was part of a recent show at Palette Art Gallery in Delhi, Collective 22 alongside some of India’s leading artists. Over the past two years she has exhibited in many shows across the Sub-Continent. In July 2021 Sonal was part of a show at MOSA in Belgium. In January 2022 she was selected for the CIMA Emerging Artist Award In India. She will be exhibiting at the India Art Fair in April 2022.
