About the Item
Antique lithograph from Le Garde-Meuble, Ancien et Moderne, a French Decorative Arts and Decor periodical. Lithography by Queton after E. Maincent.
Published by E. Maincent Rue de Lancry, 2. Paris, c. late 19th century
Desire Guilmard (1810-1885), a furniture designer and publisher, is best known for Le Garde-Meuble, ancien et moderne, a bi-monthly periodical he began in Paris in 1839 and which continued to be published until 1935, fifty years after his death. Consisting entirely of illustrations of designs for furniture, window treatments and room settings, it exerted an enormous influence promoting French styles in furniture, fabrics, and interior decoration throughout the world. Producing approximately 50 plates a year, Guilmard’s illustrations were so accurately detailed that working drawings could easily be developed from them. Le Gare-Meulbe was as a practical resource guide referenced by many decorators, architects, cabinetmakers, upholsterers and designers of the day. A large number of prints from this influential 19th century periodical are in The Cooper Hewitt Collection of the Smithsonian Institute.
