Signature: Signed lower right Publisher: Cirrus Editions, Ltd., Los Angeles, CA Edition: 250 This one: 120/250 Condition: Excellent This print is by Billy Al Bengston. It depicts what looks like a coyote staring out at the horizon on a full moon night. This print was created at the same time Bengston was creating his Moon paintings. The print has dark colors. As a result, my photographs are imperfect; they have a bit of glare. The print is in excellent condition. It is attached by two hinges to a matboard measuring 26 x 32 inches and has a Plexiglas frame. The frame is in fair condition with some light scratches. Billy Al Bengston (June 7, 1934 – October 8, 2022) was an American visual artist and sculptor who lived and worked in Venice, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii. Bengston was probably best known for work he created that reflected California's "Kustom" car and motorcycle culture. He pioneered the use of sprayed layers of automobile lacquer in fine art and often used colors that were psychedelic and shapes that were mandala-like. ARTnews referred to Bengston as a "giant of Los Angeles's postwar art scene." Early life and education Bengston was born in Dodge City, Kansas, on June 7, 1934. His family relocated to Los Angeles in 1948. He attended Los Angeles City College in 1952. Subsequently, he studied painting under Richard Diebenkorn and Saburo Hasegawa at the California College of Arts and Crafts, in Oakland, California, in 1955 and returned to Los Angeles to study at Otis Art Institute in 1956. Career Bengston began showing with the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles (founded and run by Walter Hopps and Edward Kienholz, and later Irving Blum), having five shows between 1958 and 1963. As a fixture at the gallery, he was among a cohort of artists that included Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, Larry Bell, Kenneth Price, Ed Moses, and Robert Irwin. (The gallery closed in 1966.) In a 2018 article in Vanity Fair, Bengston recalled that he and Irwin hung the 32 pieces in Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup-can paintings show at Ferus in 1962. He notably described the atmosphere of Ferus as a "macho intellectual gang bang". After seeing the work of Jasper Johns at the 1958 Venice Biennale he adopted the motif of a set of sergeant's stripes. This recurring chevron image was painted with industrial materials and techniques associated with the decoration of motorcycle fuel tanks and surfboards. According to Grace Glueck of The New York Times, Bengston "was among the first to ditch traditional oil paint on canvas, opting instead for sprayed layers of automobile lacquer on aluminum in soft colors, achieving a highly reflective, translucent surface." Bengston encouraged viewers in the early 1960s to associate his art with motorcycle subculture; on the cover of a 1961 catalogue for a Ferus show, he was seen straddling a motorcycle. The landscapes in Erró’s work are a constantly changing kaleidoscope of images, multivalent and mysterious, not infrequently controversial, bursting with life – and titillating, too! There is room in his pictures for both paradise and visions of fear. Erró is the alias of Gudmundur Gudmundsson, born on 19 July 1932 in Olafsvik, in north-western Iceland. Since Gudmundur first became enthralled by pictures of works of art in a catalogue from the Museum of Modern Art in New York at the tender age of ten, painting has been his passion and his mission in life. He was accepted into art school in Reykjavik as a 19-year old, subsequently complementing what he had learned there with further studies in Oslo. Erró travelled extensively in Spain, Italy, France and Germany in the 1950s, studying at the Florence Academy of Art in 1954 and at the School of Byzantine Mosaic Art in Ravenna in 1955. It was around this time that he began to exhibit his works, first and foremost in Paris, where he chose to make his home in 1958. During the 1960s he established contact with the Swedish museum director Pontus Hultén, who encouraged him and took him under his wing. Over the years Erró has taken part in hundreds of exhibitions and today his works are on show in museums all over the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Erró’s pictorial world is peopled by comic-strip characters and autocratic despots alike. As the result of his own experiences, training and life lived, comes out the art of Andres Nagel. Unclassifiable in a particular style, there are many who tried to tag his work as oneiric or surrealist. Even he has been labelled as a Pop artist, by the use of newspapers on his collages, like it happens on this print. According to Nagel, all these attempts of caging the artists are vane, as "even though art is being sold as if, it is not for mass consumerism". This is, the viewer must let go, think and open his or her mind to what is being seen, and mass culture is just the opposite of that. ABOUT THE ARTIST Andrés Nagel Tejada is a Spanish painter, sculptor and printmaker born in San Sebastian in 1947. Nagel completed his studies in architecture in 1972 in Pamplona. During this time as a student he began to work in engraving techniques. Since then he starts to travel to other European countries and the north of Africa. The Spanish scene at that time was dominated by abstraction and already had international recognition thanks to artists such as Chillida and Tapies, but Andres Nagel, who didn't feel identified with these trends did tune with the artistic movements that found in other countries such as Italy, Switzerland and Germany and soon opted for figurative art. A controversial artist, he rose to prominence with some of his works at the beginning of his career. In the mid 70's Nagel started to show his works in many exhibitions, both collectively and individually. Noteworthy among these events, his participation in the exhibition "New Spanish Painting" on Hastings Gallery in New York that introduced him to the American public. In 1978 also participates in a very important exhibition that pays tribute to the work of Joan Miró in Mallorca. During the 80's the artist works in numerous international exhibitions in cities like Varna, Dortmund, Bonn, Basel or Baghdad. In 1988 the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao exhibits the graphic work of Nagel, in this show a catalogue raisonné is edited.
