Barbara Hepworth Art

British, 1903-1975
Barbara Hepworth was born on 10th January, 1903 in Wakefield, West Riding of Yorkshire. Hepworth attended the Leeds School of Art from 1920. There, she met fellow sculptor Henry Moore, who she maintained a friendly rivalry with throughout her career. From Leeds, Hepworth went on to attend the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, where she studied from 1921-24. Following her studies in London, Hepworth travelled to Italy. She begun this journey in Florence, where she was the runner-up for the Prix-de-Rome, losing only to sculptor John Skeaping, whom she began a relationship with. The pair travelled to Sienna and Rome, and were married in 1925 in Florence. During her time in Italy, Hepworth studied under sculptor Giovanni Ardini and learned how to carve marble. Upon her return to London, Hepworth and Skeaping begun to publically exhibit from their flat, until their divorce in 1929. Hepworth’s early work reflects her interest in European art movements, particularly Italian Abstraction. In 1931, Hepworth begun to sculpt her characteristic pierced figures, and Henry Moore followed suit. The pair led the path to modernist sculpture. Hepworth later became involved with the Parisian art movement, Abstraction-Création. In 1933, Hepworth and Nicholson co-founded with Nash, Read and architect Coates the Unit One art movement, with the agenda to unite surrealist practice with abstraction in contemporary British art. Hepworth moved to St. Ives, Cornwall with her second husband Nicholson and their children at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Hepworth lived and worked in Trewyn Studios. Many other British artists likewise found refuge and space in Cornwall to continue working during the war, and in its aftermath, Hepworth founded the Penwith Society of Arts in 1949. In 1950. Hepworth exhibited in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Two of her public commissions were exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951, and in 1953 she travelled to Greece, a trip which inspired her celebrated six-piece sculpture collection carved from Guarea wood between 1954-56. In 1955, Hepworth begun to exhibit in the USA, beginning with the Martha Jackson Gallery. Preferring the European Art Market, she exhibited solo at Galerie Chalette, France in 1957, and her lithographs were hung in Marlborough Fine Art in 1970. The Barbara Hepworth Museum in St Ives and The Hepworth Wakefield in West Yorkshire permanently exhibit her work in honor of her contributions to both places that the artist at times called home. Her collectors include the Tate, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongrewa and the Lynden Sculpture Garden. Hepworth has been awarded the Grand Prix at the 1959 Sao Paulo Art Biennal, the Freedom of St Ives in 1968, a CBE in 1958, and a DBE in 1965. In 2015, the Tate Britain held the first big solo exhibition of Hepworth’s work since her death, bringing together more than 70 of her works.

And it was a very fascinating time because it was a highly conceptually based school. Very much influenced by Joseph Beuys, and European Conceptualism, I didn’t really like the atmosphere there that much, because it was dominated by male painters like Jörg Immendorf, Marcus Lupertz, and a few others. then came to New York to study at SVA for two years. New York in 1978 was exciting. I was very lucky to be in a class that was full of very bubbly and very energetic artists like Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Tim Rollins, Moira Dryer, Frank Holliday, and Tom Cugliani (who later became one of my dealers). The eighties were dominated largely by Neo-Expressionist paintings. There were Germans, such as Baselitz, Kiefer, Richter, Penck, and the Italians, Clemente, Chia, Cucchi, Palladino as well as Schnabel, Fischl, Basquiat, Salle, and many others, but all of their paintings were figuratively based. But below the popular consent, there was a group of painters who were working more in the vein of what Stephen Westfall referred to as “Neo-Surrealism,” including George Condo, Jeffrey Wasserman, Kenneth Scharf, David Humphrey. However, I felt that Carroll Dunham and you were the only two painters who seemed to be less interested in the kind of narrative, lyrical, or let’s say, stationary composition. He belongs to the generation of Terry Winters, Elizabeth Murray, David Reed and Jonathan Lasker but in some strange way, if we’re looking back to the mid-eighties, we have to include New Image painters like Susan Rothenberg, Neil Jenney, and Robert Moskowitz who were working in between the figure and abstraction with a kind of condensation and compression, in relationship, lets say, to cartoon imagery. There are artists like Jeff Koons, or even Damien Hirst who took the Duchampian aspect and brought it into the continuity of his readymade. But for me, I see no difference between the crack in “Large Glass” and the drips in Jackson Pollock’s paintings. There was something that I felt in my own equation of the continuity between Paul Klee, Duchamp, Picabia, and, oddly enough, Clyfford Still. What essentially is important is how different artists carry on a dialogue among themselves so that they can all keep their work vital. Whether from the abstract paintings of Richmond Burton, Fabian Marcaccio extending the borders of his paintings on to the wall, or Cady Noland’s early scattered installation, my own pre-occupation with machinery, urban environment, and the Duchampian models has always materialized in relationship to other forms of art making.
