Coll Bardolet Art
Spanish, 1912-2007
Josep Coll i Bardolet (Campdevànol, Ripollés, November 7, 1912 - Valldemosa, July 30, 2007) was a Spanish painter. He studied in Vich and Olot. At the end of 1936, when the civil war began, he went into exile from Spain, and settled the following year in Tours, where he had his first individual exhibition in the gallery of the Touraine Institute. At Christmas 1937, he moved to Brussels, He worked in the port of Antwerp and enrolled in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He remained in the Belgian capital until 1939, the year of the outbreak of the Second World War, when he decided to return to Spain. He initially settled in Barcelona. Subsequently, he remained for a few years in Mallorca, although with a hiatus of a few months in Madrid, where he studied engraving at the San Fernando Academy. Finally, in 1944, he settled permanently in Valldemosa (Mallorca).
He exhibited in Vic, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, France, Belgium, Sweden, Norway and in the United States. His painting, sensitive and sincere, in an impressionist style, has drawn the landscape, agricultural work and Majorcan dances with watercolor, collage and especially oil painting. He also dedicated himself to still life and illustration.
Coll Bardolet was also one of the founders of the Balearic Cultural Work. In 1964, he decided to promote choral music by organizing the Torrente de Pareis Concert, which has been held annually since then. When he died, he donated most of his work to the Sanctuary of Lluc, in Mallorca. Another part was bequeathed to the Coll Bardolet Cultural Foundation in Valldemosa.(Biography provided by Galeria Sastre s l)

Await For Desire
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
At the center of "Await For Desire" stands a young woman, her expression laden with introspection. Her captivating gaze invites viewers to explore the depths of their own desires and longings. Mayowa's depiction of the woman symbolizes the human capacity for introspection and the journey of self-discovery. Her youth suggests a sense of innocence as if she is at the precipice of embarking on a profound exploration of her desires, dreams, and aspirations.
The rose flower held gently in the young woman's hand adds a layer of intrigue to the artwork. Roses have long been associated with love, desire, and beauty. In this context, the rose becomes a metaphor for the desires that lie within each of us, waiting to be explored and embraced. The delicacy with which the young woman holds the rose signifies the fragility and vulnerability of these desires. The petals, beautifully rendered by Mayowa, exude a sense of purity and grace, mirroring the young woman's own essence.
The title of the artwork, "Await For Desire," suggests a period of patient waiting and introspection. Mayowa invites viewers to contemplate the nature of desire and the role it plays in shaping our lives. The young woman's expression implies a moment of deep reflection as if she is on the cusp of a significant realization or decision. This evokes a sense of intrigue, urging viewers to reflect on their own desires, their significance, and the choices that emerge from such introspection.

Chinatown, San Francisco
By Edward Wilson Currier
Located in London, GB
'Chinatown, San Francisco', gouache on fine art paper, by Edward Wilson Currier (1903). Spofford Alley in San Francisco's Chinatown is best known for an address (number 36) where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen plotted the overthrow of China's last dynasty. During Prohibition, it was the site of turf battles over local bootlegging and protection rackets. Today it is lined with seniors' community centres. However, the quiet alley livens up in the evenings when a Chinese orchestra strikes up a tune, mah-jongg games begin with a cascade of clicking tiles, and barbers and florists use the pretence of sweeping their doorsteps to gossip. In this artist's depiction, a man smokes a long-stemmed Chinese pipe under the awning and colourful lanterns hanging from the wooden supports while a child looks on. The artwork is interesting from several standpoints including architectural, cultural and historical. Shortly after this work was painted, the neighbourhood was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake that levelled most of the city. From 1910 to 1940, Chinese immigrants were detained at the Angel Island...
