Driade Furniture

Italian

Italian furniture brand Driade offers modern designs that are joyful, whimsical and slightly mischievous — words that might be used to describe the tree nymph of Greek mythology for which the company is named. Faye Toogood’s chunky, stout Roly Poly armchair and Fabio Novembre’s enigmatic Nemo chair — in which a backrest assumes the form of a human face — are just two examples of Driade’s eclectic furnishings.

Driade was founded in 1968 by brother and sister Enrico and Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi Astori, Enrico’s wife. Described by the company as a “factory of art,” Driade was focused solely on bringing distinctive and creative seating, case pieces and decorative objects to market in its early years. The brand sought to mass-produce decor and furniture that could also be seen as provocative works of art.

Driade's initial collaborations included Italian designers such as Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Giotto Stoppino and Rodolfo Bonetto, to name a few. In the 1980s, the brand worked with influential and renowned designers from around the globe. In 1984, Driade partnered with French designer Philippe Starck and debuted his iconic Costes armchair during the same year. Projects with architects and furniture designers such as Ron Arad, Toyo Ito, Borek Sipek, Patricia Urquiola and others followed into the 2000s.

Over more than five decades — the company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2018 — Driade’s fruitful partnerships have culminated in a vast catalog of chairs, sofas, coffee tables and other furnishings for the home and garden that evoke a unique and diverse blend of cultures.

Driade has also garnered international acclaim, winning the Compasso d’Oro award in 1979 and 2001 for Enzo Mari’s Delfira chair and ebony-finished, chipboard-top table, and again in 2008 for Ron Arad’s MT3 rocking armchair.

On 1stDibs, discover a range of vintage and contemporary Driade tables, cabinets, armchairs and other furniture.

"Torquemada" Chair in Carved Brushed Oak by Philippe Starck for Driade, 2017
By Driade, Philippe Starck
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Torquemada" is a chair, designed by Philippe Starck and manufactured by Driade, with a structure available in the following versions: brushed oak or brushed oak with carved backrest and seat. Backrest element support is in polished or mirror finished cast aluminum. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 18.8", W. 16.1", H. 30.5", Seat H. 18.3" Although these pieces of design seem apparently imperfect and unique, the collection is composed of a table and a set of seats: a chair, an armchair and a stool. The latter feature two handcuffs in mirror-polished stainless steel, a detail that is as structural as well as decorative and ironically reminiscent of the imagery coming from the ancient Inquisition and its infamous and fearsome prosecutor. A link that regards the concept as well as the project and explains where the name of this collection comes from. Each piece is also available in a more precious version, in gouged oak...

"Nemo" Brass, Iron or Copper Finished Head-Armchair by Fabio Novembre for Driade
By Driade, Fabio Novembre
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Nemo" is an iconic polyethylene fixed or swivel monobloc head-armchair available in metal powder finishes (metal powder mixed with resin) such as iron, copper and brass. As these finishes contain metal powder, natural oxidation has to be considered as a peculiar feature of the armchair and not as a defect. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 32.6", W. 35.4", H. 53.1", Seat H. 16.1" FABIO NOVEMBRE uses furniture design to tell intense and fascinating stories in which the protagonist is often the human figure. This human figure is capable of becoming abstract and universal, able to propose a mythical beauty as occurred in Greek art. So that Nemo, a face with classic features, is hollowed out to create an inhabitable space. The result is a head-armchair to be lived from the inside. Like a mask, it simultaneously conceals and reveals its inhabitant. Fabio Novembre said about Nemo: "In 2010 it happened that the name "Nemo" immediately evoked the famous little fish, protagonist of the movie of the same name, made by Pixar in 2003. If this question had been asked at the end of the nineteenth century, the answer would have probably been Captain Nemo...

"Blocco" Black Mongolian Fur or Velvet Pouf Designed by Nanda Vigo for Driade
By Nanda Vigo, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Blocco" is a pouf, designed by Nanda Vigo and manufactured by Driade, with wooden frame and padding in polyurethane foam of varying density. Upholstery in black Mongolian fur or in Loira velvet. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 19.2", W. 17.3", H. 22.8", Seat H. 14.1" The “Blocco” seat / pouf, designed with such purpose in 1970, has got now a fresh re-edition with the same function but with a more joyful spirit by offering colorful covers. Have a nice seat! Nanda Vigo said about "Blocco": "Many elements called “furniture” are needed that actually remain “fixed”, once set, to the well-being. I've always rejected the tendency to overload space; therefore I have always worked to the limit of need." NANDA VIGO, born in Milan in 1936, lives in East Africa and works in Milan. She showed an interest in art at a very early age, when she had the opportunity to spend time with Filippo de Pisis, a family friend, and to study the architecture of Giuseppe Terragni, in which she immediately noticed the subtle employment of natural light. She studied architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne, worked as an intern in San Francisco, then returned to Italy where she opened her own studio in Milan. The underlying characteristic of the work has always been the relationship between light and space, which she has developed in a series of “environments” that blend architecture and design. In 1959 she began to visit the studio of Lucio Fontana and got to know that artists who founded the Azimut Gallery in Milan: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani and Vincenzo Agnetti. During that period, she developed relations with the artists of the Zero group in Germany, the Netherlands and France, as a result of which her work was shown in more than 400 solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe. Between 1964 and 1966 she participated in some thirteen Zero exhibitions, including “Nul 65” at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and “Zero: An Exhibition of European Experimental Art” at the Modern Art Gallery in Washington D.C.. She was the curator of the legendary exhibition “Zero avantgarde” in 1965 in Fontana’s studio in Milan, at which some 28 artists were represented. In 1964 she created Utopie with Lucio Fontana for the Triennale. Again at the Triennale, in 1973 she organized a performance at which architects and artists freely intervened: it's considered to have been the first happening at the event. In 1974 she received the New York Award for the Industrial Design for the Golden Gate lamp...

By B. Sipek, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The gorgeous Hera vase by Borek Sipek has leaves, shoots, thorns and twigs clinging on their surface or a onion top. A whole world of fantasy stolen from the world of plants. Borek Sipek (1949-2016) studied interior design at the school for Arts & Crafts in Prague from 1964-1968. He went to Germany to study architecture at the Kunsthochschule in Hamburg. He also studied aesthetics and philosophy. In 1983, he moved to the Netherlands and set up the design office that provided a base for his subsequent explorations of oriental and occidental arts and crafts. His fateful encounter with Driade resulted in furniture and objects. The ideas eventually found their way into the Eidos, Malastrana and Follies Collections. Sipek's systematic revisitations of traditional craft techniques and materials have won several prestigious awards including, the Croix Chevalier Dans L'ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres from the French Government in 1991. In 1993, he won the Prins Bernard Fons Prize for architecture and arts. Sipek has an international reputation as an imaginative and versatile artist. Italic Lace Petal Placemat in Black by Galante & Lancman for Driade
By Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman, Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The city of Siena in 1440 birthed the original lace items that provided the inspiration for a range of table accessories. Back then they were made with a crochet hook, now they are made using photogravure. They give a modern twist to an ancient version a memory and style soundly based in the traditions of this part of Italy. This gave rise to “Italic Lace”, a collection of refined placemats and coasters, designed for those who love to dress the table with elegance that is never casual. The finishes include shiny brass, glossy black, red and classical white. In 2003, designer, Maurizio Galante, teamed up with trend forecast analyst and designer Tal Lancman, to form Interware. Their crossover vision transverses the different design disciplines, from fashion to furniture, interiors, architecture and gardening. As the duo moves freely between disciplines, they revisit domains equipped with new understandings, insights and observations. The process results in a multi-faceted concept, with a subtle balance between the pragmatic and the irrational. Interware’s philosophy proposes a series of objects/companions; expressive, amusing, and thought-provoking designs, bestowing owners with their friendly presence. The team works on all elements of design and production, from trend research, to marketing, including definition of brand image, strategy, communication, packaging, and presentation. Clients and collaborations include American Express, Baccarat, Boffi Italia, Baleri, Chopard, Driade, Elipson, Felissimo Japan, Itochu Japan, Nokia, Nymphenburg, Pommery, Tai Ping...

Ludovica +Roberto Palomba Driade "Rever" Three-Seat Sectional Sofa, 2017

Rever is the product of the Driade collection designed for young people by Ludovica +Roberto Palomba. The sofa is made in a wooden frame with elastic belting and padding in polyurethane foams with different densities with a removable cover in fabric or fixed in leather. Rever features plump, generous curves and proportions. The original way the armrests are fitted a fundamental feature of this sofa – is paired with special attention to detail: the slightly padded edge looks as if it comes from a fashion house because it is inspired by the lapel of jackets and the flap of pockets. It is perceived as a shape which, thanks to the softly rounded forms of the padding, can be put together to create dynamic and extremely comfortable modular arrangements. Rever is an extremely versatile sofa. The large day beds...
