Goyard Handbags and Purses

Vintage Goyard handbags and purses are refined, simple and often branded with the iconic Goyardine interlocking chevron pattern. The house is famous for its luxurious totes, messenger bags, shoulder bags and other accessories, such as the lightweight and reversible Saint Louis tote. These internationally renowned bags were born out of the maison’s original business of making leather goods and other luxury travel wares — in fact, Goyard trunks are highly sought-after antiques today.

Founded in 1792 as the House of Martin, the company gained favor with the French aristocracy and transformed into an international brand once it passed into the hands of the Goyard family. Goyard is rather secretive and doesn’t frequently engage with the press or social media, and today the brand continues to specialize in producing premium trunks and leather goods.

When it comes to Goyard bags, while the Anjou and Artois totes are popular items, the Saint Louis is the brand’s best known offering. In addition to the PM (petite modèle) and XXL versions, the Saint Louis bag is also made in the widely cherished GM (grand modèle) size. The Junior size is believed to have been discontinued.

The Saint Louis tote, crafted from waterproofed cotton, linen and hemp canvas, is smart, tough and roomy. This sturdy, reversible carryall’s name comes from King Louis IX — a reportedly kind-hearted ruler of France during the 13th century who was also known as Saint Louis. The bag is an everyday status symbol for those in the know, who often opt to personalize theirs with monograms or motifs. (A particularly striking version of the Goyard Saint Louis features a flurry of hand-painted butterflies.)

In 1998, the maison was purchased by passionate Goyard bag and trunk collector Jean-Michel Signoles. With the help of his family, he re-established the brand as a purveyor of luxury bags that continue to garner recognition.

Vintage and Designer Handbags and Purses for Sale on 1stDibs

An integral part of fashion, handbags and purses have been indispensable accessories ever since we began to carry around personal items. Level of craftsmanship, style and shape matters — from coin purses in ancient Greece to early 20th-century opera bags and onward, handbags have evolved considerably over the years to meet our needs and desires, whether or not you happen to be prioritizing functionality over a flashy exterior.

Once, a single “It” handbag ruled each fashion season. No more. Today, handbag lovers are savvier and have a wider range of shopping options. Nevertheless, classic bags still rule.

“It is not a fashion bag — it is a statement bag,” says Mightychic's Debra Kent of Hermès's widely beloved accessories. “When you carry an iconic Hermès bagBirkin, Kelly, Constance — no one knows how long you have been into this culture or if you are a newbie. Your status is validated immediately.”

First released in 1997, Fendi's Baguette rose to fame along with Carrie Bradshaw, the Sex and the City character portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker. Recently, the design has seen such a resurgence in popularity that Fendi has reissued it.

They are part of design history, so owning a handbag has meaning. As New York–based fashion historian Sarah C. Byrd says, “You have made the choice to invest in this piece because you understand the value of it in the past and in the future to come.”

From a 1980s Chanel black leather quilted mini buckle bag to the rare Hermès Birkin 30cm Himalayan with diamond hardware to a range of 19th century bags, find a rich variety of vintage and designer handbags and purses spanning numerous brands on 1stDibs — seasonal “It” designation no longer needed.

Questions About Goyard Handbags and Purses
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
Goyard is so expensive for a few reasons. First, the French fashion house uses costly materials, including its signature Goyardine canvas made of natural hemp, linen and cotton fibers. Also, artisans perform much of the crafting process by hand, making manufacturing expenses considerable. Finally, Goyard produces only a limited number of bags each year. Since demand often outweighs supply, Goyard is able to sell its pieces at aspirational price points. Explore a selection of Goyard bags on 1stDibs.

Serving the packing needs of French travellers, Goyard began producing its luxury trunks in 1792 under the name House of Martin. The trunks are characterized by their hand-painted monograms, unique motifs and stripes. Shop a collection of antique Goyard trunks from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.

In 1792, the House of Martin was a well-known trunk maker creating trunks and other leather goods for the French. The company was renamed in 1853 after Francois Goyard took over the business. Goyard is still in business and known for its artisanal craftsmanship and the scarcity of this luxe brand. Rather than mass-producing products like its competition, Goyard is happy to create trunks one at a time, and often with custom specifications. What makes Goyard so special is the heritage of the fashion house and the quality of the pieces it produces. Few brands have stood the test of time as resolvedly as the French House of Goyard, a family-owned maker of luxury handbags, totes and accessories in chic, timeless styles and a vibrant array of colors. The internationally renowned bags were born out of the maison’s original business of making leather goods and other luxury travel wares, which were once the favorite of the French aristocracy. Goyard trunks are highly sought-after antiques today. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Goyard pieces.

What Goyard bag is the most popular is largely a matter of personal opinion. Some of the French luxury brand's most notable styles include the Anjou, the Saint Louis, the Saigon Top Handle, the Aligre, the Petite Flot and the Minaudiere. Shop a collection of Goyard bags on 1stDibs.

What is so special about Goyard bags comes down to their materials. Most Goyard bags feature Goyardine, a canvas made from hemp, linen and cotton. Durable and lightweight, it features a distinctive "Y" pattern created from three chevrons of different shades. A coating on the canvas makes it resistant to both staining and the effects of water, making Goyard bags capable of standing the test of time even with daily use. The Goyard pattern doesn't have a name, but the French luxury fashion house calls the fabric that features it Goyardine. The son of the maison's founder, Edmond Goyard, created this proprietary fabric and its unique print in 1892. The pattern incorporates the Y found in the center of the Goyard surname and dotted chevrons meant to represent the logging industry, which employed the Goyard family prior to the founding of their fashion house in 1792. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Goyard bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024
No, Goyard does not have an online store. The French fashion house does provide distance ordering services through some of its boutiques, and you can learn more about them on the official Goyard website. Alternatively, you can shop for Goyard handbags and accessories on trusted online platforms like 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
The exact reason why Goyard doesn't sell online has never been stated. However, many people speculate that the French luxury fashion house has refrained from entering the online market in order to control access to its pieces. In this way, Goyard is able to maintain its reputation for being an exclusive brand. Shop a variety of Goyard bags and accessories on 1stDibs.

To buy a Goyard bag in the US, visit high-end boutiques in big cities like New York, San Francisco and Beverly Hills. You can also shop for Goyard bags from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs. Originating in 1792 as the House of Martin with a focus on trunk-making, the luxury leather goods business served the packing needs of French travelers. To spot a fake Goyard bag, examine the print closely. On authentic pieces, you'll see a crisp, well-defined print with easy-to-read letters and clear markings. Replicas rarely are able to perfectly emulate Goyard's signature motif. Shop a range of Goyard handbags from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.

Goyard bags are of outstanding quality, featuring durable coated canvas material and excellent workmanship.  Personalizations of Goyard bags are still hand-painted by Goyard artisans in the house’s ateliers.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
Whether Goyard is easy to get varies. The French luxury fashion house produces only a limited number of pieces each year, and demand is often high. As a result, certain pieces may be in short supply at the brand's boutiques. In addition, Goyard does not have an online store or partner with third-party e-commerce retailers, which can add to the difficulty of making a purchase. You can, however, find Goyard pieces on trusted online platforms. Explore a diverse assortment of Goyard bags and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 14, 2024
Goyard is so hard to find because the supply is much smaller than the demand for the French luxury fashion house's iconic bags. Skilled artisans produce each piece by hand through a process that takes about four weeks, and the lengthy manufacturing process means that Goyard can only make a limited number of bags each year. In addition, Goyard makes its bags available for sale through an official online website and limits customers to four annual purchases, increasing demand and further reducing supply. On 1stDibs, explore a selection of Goyard bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024
