Louis Aston Knight Art

American, 1873-1948
Louis Aston Knight, commonly known as an expatriate, was in fact born in Paris to American parents, his father the celebrated American painter Daniel Ridgeway Knight. Receiving early and influential instruction from his father he later studied at the Académie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and Robert Fleury (1891-1898). Knight’s exhibition debut was at the Annual Paris Salon in 1894, thrust him into an increasingly successful career over which he was awarded numerous honors. He was notably the first American painter to win the Paris Salon gold medals for two consecutive years and his work was included in such distinguished venues as the Paris World’s Fair of 1900 and in 1927 he was made a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. Although he resided in Paris, Knight exhibited very frequently throughout the United States. Despite his indisputable success, Knight never found a niche in the Parisian society and bore a dislike for the traditional ateliers of Paris. He spent a great deal of his time out of Paris in a mill that he rented in Normandy, once the home of the poet Chateaubriand.

Landscape with Trees
By Louis Aston Knight
Located in Atlanta, GA
Louis Aston Knight, was the son of the American expatriate artist, Daniel Ridgway Knight. Born in Paris in 1873, Louis, unlike his father, had the privilege to be brought up in a home where he was surrounded by art and music. Raised and educated in Europe, Louis attended the Chigwell School in England for his Liberal Arts Education and began his artistic training, under the guidance of his father. Later he studied formally with the great French Romantic painters, Robert-Fleury and Jules Lefebvre. In 1894 Aston Knight debuted at the Paris Salon, starting a highly acclaimed career. Among his many awards, he won a Bronze medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, an honorable mention at the Paris Salon in 1901, a gold medal in Lyon in 1903, a gold medal in Geneva and in Nantes in 1904 and Gold medals at the Paris Salon in both 1905 and 1906, earning him the title Hors concours as the first American to win two gold medals at the Salon in two consecutive years. Knight, was also made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1924 becoming an Officer in 1928 and eventually a Commander in 1934. Louis Aston Knight is most famous for his French landscapes executed in and around his home in Beaumont-le-Roger. Aston looked up to Claude Monet, and visited him from time to time at his home in Giverny. He was particularly impressed with Monet's gardens, and strove to cultivate a garden as beautiful as the master's. Knight also awarded prizes each year to the neighboring peasants who kept the nicest gardens. This ensured him of good models for his cottage landscape paintings. Gradually Aston Knight became well known in the New York art scene and traveled to the United States many times – painting scenes in New York, Florida and California. In 1911, Knoedler and Co. held an exhibition of his landscapes of the U.S.A. and France. His exhibition at the Levy Gallery in New York, in 1931 attracted much attention. In fact, "Art News" critiqued the show (26 December issue) and described his fame and plein-air approach: A group of new landscapes by Aston Knight, the popular painter of the Normandy Riverscape, is the Holiday attraction at the Levy Gallery. Mr. Knight sticks closely to his well established formula, doubtless due to the tremendous acclaim acquired in his earlier years when Hopkinson Smith...

Berthelsen received a full scholarship and enrolled at the college, where he was awarded the Gold Medal twice. After graduating, he had an active career traveling across the United States and Canada performing in operas and concerts, before joining the voice faculty at his alma mater in 1910. In 1913, Berthelsen became the voice department director at the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music. While in Chicago, Berthelsen met the landscape painter, Svend Svendsen...

Springtime By Louis Aston Knight
By Louis Aston Knight
Located in New Orleans, LA
Louis Aston Knight 1873-1948 American Springtime Signed "Aston Knight / Paris" (lower left) Oil on canvas A quintessential landscape scene by Parisian-born American artist Louis Aston Knight, this compelling composition demonstrates the artist's mastery of the genre. Son of legendary landscapist Daniel Ridgway Knight, Aston Knight devoted his life to landscape painting much like his father, maintaining the elder’s ideals of expressing the “true to life” splendors of the natural world. Aston Knight's Springtime is emblematic of this dogma. Here, the artist renders a series of humble countryside shanties built along the banks of a tranquil yet strong river. Though juxtaposed with man-made structures, the composition is a celebration of the river's fortitude and beauty. The water's strong current is a powerful lifeline for the terrain it runs through, cultivating and nourishing a robust natural landscape. Colorful wildflowers spring up along the banks, and thickets of trees and saplings grow along the river's curving edge. Sinuous branches reach out across the water. This composition showcases Knight's signature ability to render reflective water with a level of realism unmatched by his peers. Raised and educated in Europe, Aston Knight was surrounded by artists throughout his youth, including such figures as Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonnier, and gained his first elements of artistic education directly from his father. He later completed his formal artistic studies under the tutelage of the great French Romantic painters Robert Fleury and Jules Lefebvre. Knight's works differed from his father's in that they tended to take a more impressionistic style, a break from the senior’s photographic precision; he also rarely included figures in his works, instead focusing on the landscape's more ephemeral qualities. Despite these key idiosyncrasies, father and son shared an appreciation of nature and man’s role and impact upon it. Though Aston Knight did not visit the United States until he was in his thirties, he was a tremendous success both here and in Europe. His paintings even found favor among American presidents. President Warren G. Harding commissioned a work from Aston Knight for the White House, and his successor, President Calvin Coolidge, held a private exhibition of his works at the famed residence. This particular work was also once housed in a notable estate, the home of prominent Old Western film actor Eugene Iglesias...
