Matt Moulthrop Art

American

Matt Moulthrop is a third-generation woodturner and has spent his entire life surrounded by wood. As a young adult, he learned the artistry of woodturning comes not from the hand, but the eye. Being able to “see” the shape of the bowl has been a legacy and a gift that he has worked to improve upon with his vision and version of style, form and texture. Moulthrop strives to blend both tradition and innovation by honoring his legacy and creating a new one. Each piece he creates is a unique experience for both him as the maker and hopefully the viewer as well. He endeavors to fully display the beauty and richness of the tree and story it has to tell. Wormholes convey past life, rings communicate growth, and certain colors tell the story of death by lightning or blight. Moulthrop sees it as his job to tell the story, showing rather than talking, lengthening the life of the tree rather than ending it. Moulthrop’s work is included in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, Minnesota; the Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona; the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan; the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia; among many others.

Barca Pez (Fish Boat) - wood sculpture by Chilean artist Pilar Ovalle
By Pilar Ovalle
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Chilean artist Pilar Ovalle's sculpture "Barca Pez," or "Fish Boat," is crafted with driftwood collected from lake shores in Chile combined with dimensional Alerce, a native Chilean wood. It can be suspended as shown or a custom bracket (not included) can be designed based on the site to make it into an exciting wall sculpture. In Ovalle’s imagination, boats embody animal forms, reinforcing the imaginative versus physical nature of the boat as a representation of travel. Ovalle says of her work, "As I work directly with Nature, combining wood already ‘worked’ by wind, water and time, with ‘elaborated’ - sawn - wood, I do this with a critical scope, dealing with ecology and progress, with emotion and poetry somehow set against rationality and technology, or setting ‘wisdom’ against mere information." This sculpture is suspended from two wires, but could also be wall hung with a custom bracket (not included). We would be happy to assist with the design of this custom bracket. Ovalle traveled to Southern Chile to study with boat builders and learn the traditional skills of the trade, which is evident in the graceful curve of the hulls she has built with traditional joinery and wood "stitches" and without the use of nails. Born in Santiago, Chile, Pilar Ovalle began her studies in 1989 at the Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago. She studied with the Instituto through the early '90s, during which time she also won Third Prize at the XV Concurso de Arte Joven (Young Art Contest) and received grants from Fondart (National Fund for the Arts) for her projects “Sculpture with Shattered Wood” and “Curved Wood Sculpture...

Contemporary Installation Sculpture, Woven and Crocheted Videotape with Cotton
By John Garrett
Located in St. Louis, MO
John Garrett was raised in southern New Mexico by parents who were both educators. They instilled in him an appreciation for the handmade with their collections of Native American arts and crafts. He moved to Claremont, California, to attend college at Claremont Men’s College (now Claremont McKenna College.) Following his desire to make things by hand, he enrolled in a weaving class taught by Marion Stewart at Scripps College in 1970. His intrigue with the tools, systems and materials involved in weaving and other textile constructions led him to take other courses with Neda Al-Hilali a year later, also at Scripps. He did graduate work at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied with Bernard Kester and Vasa. Garrett has exhibited throughout the United States for over thirty years in hundreds of exhibitions, as well as in Europe, Africa and Asia. Garrett has worked simultaneously with two and three-dimensional formats to create his textile forms with a variety of materials. Visually unpredictable, his work may be woven, wrapped, plaited, riveted, painted, rusted, twined, nailed, stitched or tied. With an expansive repertoire of materials, each work of art is meticulously crafted, while achieving an energetic complexity; he moves gracefully from constructing wall pieces to baskets, breathing new life into discarded objects. Currently a full time studio artist, he teaches workshops on creativity and experimental basketry at schools nationwide. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in 1983 and 1995 as well as elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2010.
