Richard Saba Art

American, b. 1946
Birthplace: Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1946 Education: Minneapolis College of Art & Design, B.F.A. 1968 Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, 1967 University of Washington, M.F.A. 1970 Awards: 2015 Basil Alkazzi Award for Excellence 2003/2013 Pollock/Krasner Foundation Grant 1969 University of Washington Research Grant 1967 Skowhegan School Scholarship 1965 Ford Foundation Grant Eric Gibson, the contributing editor of Studio International, writes: Richard Saba's work is rooted in the expressionist aesthetic, in particular that of Abstract Expressionism. His particular idiom consists of gesture painting in which vibrant but nuanced color plays a prominent role, the whole ordered by a vestigial Cubist structure. What sets his paintings apart from expressionism new and old is his effort to make his abstract language speak to broader issues about life and human values. That he succeeds is evident in the emotional scope of his work. It runs from broad and confident to restrained and introverted, and is possessed of a range and suppleness rare in contemporary painting. Such is his success at invoking more than simply the conditions of painting that are moments when one feels he has come as close to narrative art as abstraction can. Richard Saba earned his M.F.A. degree from the University of Washington after receiving his B.F.A. at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work is in public and corporate collections such as the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, IBM Corporation, and EF Hutton. He has been featured in one-person and group exhibitions across the United States throughout the last 30 years.

Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York. Landfield joined the David Whitney...

Phenomena Spectrum Guardian by Paul Jenkins, Abstract Expressionist artist

Located in London, GB
Phenomena Spectrum Guardian by Paul Jenkins (1923 - 2012) Acrylic on canvas 76 x 101.5 cm (29 ⁷/₈ x 40 inches) Signed lower middle Paul Jenkins Executed in 1970 Provenance: Gallerie Iris Wazzau, Davos, Switzerland Private collection, Cologne, Germany Artist biography: Born at Kansas City in Missouri (USA), the multi-media artist, poet and playwright Paul Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...
