Fontana Table Lamp

About the Design

In his first year as artistic director at the Milanese design house Fontana Arte (founded by Giò Ponti and Luigi Fontana) in 1954, French glass artist Max Ingrand (1908–69), who had made a mark in his native country creating detailed stained-glass windows for cathedrals including Notre-Dame de Paris, devised a stunningly minimal table lamp. The Fontana light would go on to be one of both Ingrand and Fontana Arte’s most recognizable creations — and indeed one of the most influential lamps in design history.

The Fontana lamp’s delightfully simple silhouette belies its technical complexities. Both the shade and body of the fixture are crafted in frosted, handblown glass, a process that required achieving an identical finish for two entirely different shapes. These parts are set atop a base of metal that is powder-coated to match the glass. Ingrand’s original lamp design was white; Fontana Arte soon reissued a version in black and now offers light gray and purple, as well as a brass variation on Ingrand’s form that’s available in several sizes.

While a monochrome table lamp bears seemingly little in common with a kaleidoscopic, figurative stained-glass panel, to Ingrand, the creative concept behind the two wasn’t so different. If he harnessed light in a certain way, Ingrand believed, a designer could define shape and give a sense of movement with no color at all. “Light was no longer just a means to breathe life into color but became a means to breathe life into an entire architecture,” the artist once said. Indeed, the original Fontana, with its charismatic shape and romantic glow, seems to come alive when powered up, Ingrand’s careful calibrations of light and form giving it an impressive depth without the need for any additional decorative details.

In-the-know aesthetes may refer to the lamp as “the 1853,” a reference to the piece’s original name and one that often appears on listings for early models. The name was later changed in order to pay tribute to its manufacturer, a certain indication of the lamp’s importance to Fontana Arte’s legacy.

Pair of "Fontana piccola" lamps (1853) by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte - Italy
By Fontana Arte, Max Ingrand
Located in Padova, IT
Designed in 1954 by the French glassmaker and decorator Max Ingrand, this precious white satin blown glass lamp was initially called "1853" and later "Fontana" in homage to the manufacturer. Max Ingrand was in fact the Artistic Director of this company for over ten years. In the world of design "1853" is still today the distinctive name of the object. Object with an iconic and timeless design, Fontana has earned the title of "bedside lamp par excellence". It is equipped with multiple switching: both the base and the lampshade contain one or more light sources. Multiple lighting allows you to meet multiple lighting needs: from the slight liminity of the rest light, to the intense light for reading up to an emotional and soft light obtained by indirect emission. Max Ingrand, whose full name was Maurice Max-Ingrand (Bressuire, December 20, 1908 - Paris, August 25, 1969), was a French glassmaker, decorator and designer. He is known for having created the stained glass windows of numerous churches in France and abroad and for having been the artistic director of the Italian lamp company...

This large pice has both the structure and the base in painted metal. The body is in white opaline glass, while the lampshade is new fabric. This piece includes the first two-way switch, for body and lampshade. Bibliography: Giuliana Gramigna, "Repertorio dell Design Italiano 1950-2000", p. 39, illustrated. Maurice Max-Ingrand, better known as Max Ingrand (20 December 1908, Bressuire – 25 August 1969, Paris) was a French artist and decorator, known for his work in studio glass and his stained glass windows. He was educated at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts and École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, studying under Jacques Grüber and Charles Lemaresquier. He married Paulette Rouquié (1910-1997) in 1931. He worked with his wife in glass etching, exhibiting work at the 21st Société des artistes décorateurs in 1931. Ingrand began to work in stained glass windows for private commissions. His first church windows were for Sainte-Agnès, Maisons-Alfort and participating in the design for Notre-Dame de Paris in 1937. He was drafted for military service in 1939 and fell into captivity at Hoyerswerda in May 1940. He returned from captivity only in 1945. He divorced his wife in 1946 and married Marie-Alberte Madre-Rey, with whom he had two children. He was artistic director of Milano interior design company Fontana Arte during 1954–1967. He was elected president of the French scouting association (Association Française de l'Éclairage) in 1968. He founded the company Verre Lumière, one of the first producers of halogen lamps, in 1968. Ingrand created numerous church stained glass windows during the late 1940s to 1960s (in some cases replacing windows that had been destroyed in World War II) including windows in Pontoise Cathedral (1955), Strasbourg Cathedral (1956), the chapels of Château de Blois (1957), Château d'Amboise, Château de Chenonceau and Château de Caen, Saint-Pierre de Yvetot (at 1046 m² the largest stained glass window in Europe), Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, Rouen Cathedral, Beauvais Cathedral, Saint-Malo Cathedral, Tours Cathedral, Church of the Jacobins, Münster Cathedral (1961), Liège Cathedral (1968), São Paulo Cathedral, Washington National Cathedral (with Claude Serre...

Mid Century Modern
Combat operations during World War II destroyed the stained-glass windows of churches around France. Max Ingrand (1908–69), a French designer who spent time as a POW, would become a leader in their restoration and, in turn, bring his expressive vision to some of the most inventive postwar glass objects, including the striking 1962 Glass Drop Pendant model 2259. Born in Bressuire, Ingrand spent some of his childhood in Chartres, where he was drawn to the medieval stained glass in the city’s fa...
