Abstract Studio Pottery Stoneware ‘Pagoda Pot’ by Alan Ashpool, England C.1970s

About the Item

A wonderful three hooped ‘Pagoda Pot’ by Alan Ashpool, tiered forms made from a mixture of thrown and slipcast sections joined together, in an ecru / pale green colourway, with three matt green slip stripes. In very good condition with no chips or cracks. Alan Ashpool backstamp to the base. Dorset based potter Alan Ashpool, studied pottery under Heber Matthews (1905-1959), a foremost student of William Staite Murray and teacher of Hans Coper. During the 1960s Ashpool’s pots were sold in leading design stores such as Heal’s, alongside those of Dame Lucie Rie and featured in numerous exhibitions of the day. He is latterly recognized for his ‘Pagoda Pots’ – tiered forms made from a mixture of thrown and slipcast sections joined together. Measures: 37cm Height x 15cm diameter – base 9cm, weight 1.5kg.

    A stunning three hooped ‘Pagoda Pot’ by Dorset potter Alan Ashpool, with a flared bowl to the top, tiered forms made from a mixture of thrown and slipcast sections joined together, culminating in a bell shaped base. Predominantly in an ecru colourway, followed by a dark grey glaze, then a turquoise/blue glaze, culminating in a stunning bronze manganese glaze. There are also beautiful blue flecks in the ecru finish, which were created in the firing process. A wonderfully impressive and tactile piece measuring 40cm in height, in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Alan Ashpool backstamp to the base alongside the original address label.     A 1970s studio pottery vase by Carn, Cornwall. Rare hand built, facetted wood-cut mould design. With raised tubeline decoration and moss coloured highlight glaze to three sides, and blue glaze to the back. We have two of these vases as illustrated. This listing is for one vase but the second vase is available to buy separately in or other listings. The one you see here is on the left hand side in the photo of the pair. Carn is the only surviving pottery out of the iconic 1960’s and 1970’s Trio of Cornish potteries – Carn, Tremaen and Tremar. The Pottery was established in an old chapel by John Beusmans in 1971 in the village of Nancledra near St. Ives in Cornwall. John studied at Redruth Art College with his parents encouragement. His parents owned a retail pottery shop which exposed John to a lot of Cornish pottery styles. (Incidentally his parents also made the lamp shades for the renowned Troika lamp...
