1920s Italian Signed Bronze Sculpture

About the Item

Bronze on a marble base It bears Mayo's signature. Trademark Fondart - Lagana Napoli. “Of the first sculpture, a group of highly vigorous original artistry, all that remains is Adam's Mask “ This phrase is from a very rare 1929 pamphlet L'Abruzzo nel mio cuore ["Abruzzo in my hear"], an invaluable account of the history of this partially lost masterpiece. Our beautiful head is the only surviving piece of thewonderful sculpture group Adam's Sleep by Elisabetta Mayo. Let's again hear the words of author Beatrice Testa for the description: “A strange, terrifying mask, where the facial features of the first man have been brutalized by rebellion and sin, borders on the horror of the basest beastliness. Between his forehead bumps, protruding cheekbones, bags under his eyes swollen with distrubed sleep, and his flabby and ignoble mouth, we can glimpse the flicker of a sly, mocking wickedness”. This unsparing yet realistic description does not prevent us from appreciating the undeniable sculptural power of the work and its inimitable fascination. This sculpture, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. The Bronze sculpture is on stepped Portoro Marble base and was created in France and signed “Matto” which was the pseudonym for Marcel Bouraine. Marcel Bouraine was a renowned French sculptor known for his Art Deco works during the 1920s and 1930s. The depiction of two dancing young ladies with tambourines suggests a lively and dynamic composition, capturing the spirit of the Art Deco era. The addition of the French-style cameo glass light...

  • "African Drummer, " Fabulous Cubist Bronze Sculpture, France, 1920s
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
A brilliant example of early French cubist sculpture, this depiction of an African drummer, her hands beating the two-sided drum and her head looking up as she sings or chants to the music, illustrates the fractured, reinvented reality that Picasso and Braque invented just ten or twenty years before. The abstracted breasts of the figure bring to mind the mature Cubism of Ossip Zadkine, Jean Souverbie...
