Extremely Rare D. & J. Henderson Flint American Stoneware Pitcher Jug ca. 1829

About the Item

Very Rare Molded Stoneware Pitcher with Figural Handle, Stamped "D. & J. HENDERSON / Jersey City", circa 1829-1833, finely-molded pitcher with pedestal base, relief bearded satyr's head, scrollwork, and acanthus leaf motifs to body, and grape vine motif to spout. Handle in the form of a satyr clutching a reed pipe and staff (signs of restoration to handle). Pieces produced at this short-lived manufactory represent some of the finest molded ware produced in 19th century America. A pitcher of identical form is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, NY. This lot survives in remarkable condition for its age, use, and fragility.
