19th Century Russian Icon from the Moscow School, depicting "Our Lady of Kazan"

About the Item

We present you this exquisite and extremely rare Russian icon adorned with a gilt silver oklad, bearing the marks of both the silversmith and the assayer, and measuring 31.5 x 26.5 cm. Traditionally, Russian icons encompass various depictions of the Virgin Mary, and one of the greatest reverences is Our Lady of Kazan, who is believed to be the guardian and defender of the city of Kazan in the Russian Orthodox Church. There are two significant cathedrals dedicated to her: the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg and the Kazan Cathedral in Moscow. In this particular icon, the paint is utilised to depict the clothing of the Virgin and the Child, while an embossed and intricately engraved oklad (also known as riza, and sometimes referred to as a revetment in English) serves to protect, honour and enhance the image, replicating every intricate detail of their attire. The embossing work also forms exquisite floral patterns around the figures. The practice of adorning icons with such oklads came about following a decree by the Holy Synod in 1722, which was the highest governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church between 1721 and 1917. This decree also banned the hanging of metal crosses on icons and offering coins as donations, as these practices were believed to be rooted in pagan traditions.
