Russian Icon depicting Mother of God 'Tikhvinskaia', Mid-19th Century
About the Item
This beautiful orthodox icon from the mid-19th century in Russia depicts the Mother of God Tikhvinskaia. It originates from the town of Kineshma, 335 kilometres northeast of Moscow.
According to legend, an icon of the Virgin Mary and Jesus appeared over a river near Tikhvin, 120 miles east of St. Petersburg, in 1383. A shrine, and later a monastery, was built to house the image, and like other miracle-working icons, it served as a model for copies. This panel originally formed part of an iconostasis of a monastery in St. Petersburg, where it hung to the left of the neighbouring image of Christ Pantocrator. The image is based on a Byzantine type known as the Hodegetria (“She who shows the way”). Mary points to Jesus, indicating that he is the Son of God, while he responds with a gesture of blessing.
The painting features selected saints depicted on the margins of the icon. It remains in very good condition, with minor signs of use and cosmetic wear due to its old age. Its dimensions are 35,5 x 32 cm.
