Charles Smith & Son 18 Inch Terrestrial Globe on Stand w/ Compass circa 1845-48
About the Item
A fine rare example of an 18 inch diameter terrestrial globe on mahogany stand with brass meridian and paper horizon ring depicting months and zodiac signs, The round title cartouche with lions in the crest reads “Smith’s Terrestrial Globe, Containing the whole of The Latest Discoveries and Geographic Improvements, also (t)he tracks of the most celebrated Circumnavigators, London, Smith & Son, 172, Strand”. The globe is suspended on a stand with three tapered legs, with a compass suspended in the medial tripod stretcher, and legs terminating with brass casters.
The Smith family firm of London globe makers was founded in 1799 by Charles Smith, who was “engraver to the Prince of Wales.” Smith began as a map publisher and seller, and may have added globes to their production to compete with the Cary firm. Charles began by producing miniature and pocket globes. After his son joined him in 1845, the company added a variety of floor and table models of globes, which they produced through most of the 19th century, competing with the Malby firm, also in London. The business was located at 172 Strand, London, from 1827 to 1852.
This globe dates to circa 1845-1848 and is in very good condition, with some gore damage spot restoration, minor splits near the top, some discoloration on the paper ring, other imperfections and wear commensurate with age and use.
