Gothic Revival Furniture

Gothic Revival Style

The Gothic Revival movement (also called Victorian Gothic or Neo-Gothic) emerged in Britain in the 1740s, and reached its height in the late-19th century. Gothic Revival furniture's characteristics include such decorative flourishes as pointed arches, floral details, finials, heraldic motifs and linenfold carving.

The movement was rooted in religious and social conservatism. Gothic Revival's proponents, who included Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin, the architects of London’s Houses of Parliament (designed in 1840), believed that the art and architecture of the Middle Ages were authentically spiritual and inherently moral.

In the United States, the Gothic Revival movement shaped both public buildings and private houses. Numerous American schools were built in the early-19th century in a style now called Collegiate Gothic. Many builders and craftsmen were inspired by Andrew Jackson Downing’s widely read 1850 book Architecture for Country Houses, which posited that a family’s home should exemplify their values — and that the Gothic Revival style was particularly well-suited to scholars and clergymen. Furniture with detailing that mirrored that of Gothic Revival buildings appeared in the same period. Such pieces typically feature dark, intricately carved wood, and upholstery in velvet or leather.

Much like the castles or cathedrals that inspired them, Gothic Revival chairs, bookcases and beds make a bold design statement. And while you probably don’t have to cross a moat or raise a portcullis to get through your front door, a Gothic Revival piece will declare that your home is indeed your castle.

Rare Folk Art Black Forest Root Wood Table Clock w. Bell Ringer Monk, Cuckoo St.
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare and great folk-art workmanship mantel clock for the collectors and enthousiasts. Over the years we have had the pleasure of owning and selling a number of beautiful Black Forest antiques, but never did we come accross a 19th century Black Forest, Folk Art table clock of this design and subject matter and with such amazing natural organic details. This small church or chapel-like 'clockhouse' is entirely handcrafted out of all kinds of wood, but the most eye-catching is ofcourse the organic root wood. Each piece is like an abstract sculpture and depending on how you see things, they may look like one thing to you, but like something completely different to the next person. Because of all the natural materials that were used this small church has a stunning organic look and feel, but what really takes it to another level is the bell striking mechanism. Every six hours the church bell will ring many times, the door on the left will open at every 'strike', revealing the original monk sculpture inside (as shown in the attached video in this listing). With the hand carved crucifix on the right side being made of the same color and materials, it totally blends in with the entire organic design of this Christian antique. Over the many decades this good size and rare antique clock has also grown the most amazing patina and with the natural beauty and unique artisanship that it radiates people will want to stop and study its uniqueness. This work-of-art-table-clock comes with a single day clock mechanism, protected from dust by the original 'back door'. It runs and strikes perfectly and comes with an antique key for winding it. Apart from a few minor imperfections, this rare antique is in excellent condition, which makes it perfect for lovers of unique and rare clocks in general and for Black Forest and Christian Folk Art collectors in particular. Mind you, our fair price for this sizable antique cuckoo clock...

Located in Topeka, KS
Marvelous vintage John C. Virden Medieval Gothic or Spanish Revival Style Hanging Light Fixture comprised of a 5-arm pentagon shaped black iron and wood fixture, a black iron chain, hammered iron details, candle posts, and a round brass canopy. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century. Just hanging here EXPLODING with mid-century EXCELLENCE!!!! This is a fabulous vintage John C. Virden hanging light fixture comprised of a beautiful 5 arm black wood star or pentagon shaped fixture with lovely, scrolled iron details under the arms. Each arm bares hammered iron straps across the top and down the side and host a black iron bobeche on the outer edge holding white candle covers and a scrolled detail that hangs below the arm. A pentagon shaped ferrule floats in the center above the candles with five attached black chains draping from each side of the pentagon down to a hook attachment aside the bobeche. And it’s hardwired so you could use dimming or flickering lightbulbs and add some wonderful ambiance to whatever room you choose to install. This chandelier light fixture is going to be fabulous over your Spanish Revival style dining table but it would also blend in beautifully with Gothic, Medieval, or Renaissance style décor. Or use it to make a bold statement in an entry way, over an island in your kitchen, or over the coffee table in your living room. We can’t say enough about this phenomenal light fixture. Rare Diamond Shape, Gothic Style Chandelier, Carved Theatrical Mask Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and meaningful Gothic Revival pendant with hand carved and hand painted masks. For the collectors of rare and quality crafted light fixtures, we also have this striking and meaningful 8 light, Gothic style fixture. This work of Gothic lighting art is decorated with two angelic and two slightly demonic masks opposite each other. In our view the artist who created this fixture is 'painting a picture' about the good and the bad, that is in everyone. Because of the meaning of light in Gothic and religious art, we feel it is no coincidence that a light fixture was the basis of bringing his message across. The design of this wooden fixture combined with the expressive and colorful mask...

COMPANY HISTORY The firm of Holland & Sons (1803–1942) became from 1843 one of the largest and most successful cabinet makers, and a rival to Gillows of Lancaster and London. The company's labelled Day books are now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum Archive of Art and Design where they present a virtual 'who's who' of nineteenth century society. Established in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, a relation of the architect Henry Holland (architect). Always on the leading edge of fashion, Holland & Sons employed some of England's foremost designers and participated in all of the International Exhibitions of 1851, 1855, 1862, 1867, 1872 and 1878. Holland and Sons also participated in many of the leading international exhibitions including London in 1862, Vienna in 1873 and Paris in 1867 and 1872. After a brief period in which the company was known as Taprell, Holland & Son c.1835-43, William Holland gained sole command after the senior partner Taprell's retirement. From 1843 onwards they were known as Holland and Sons. The relationship between builder and cabinet maker is similar to another leading Victorian firm, Trollope and Sons. Their earliest known commission was to furnish the Athenaeum Club, London, 1824- 1838. They also worked alongside the prestigious firm of Thomas Dowbiggin at Osborne House, and eventually took over their premises and business at 23 Mount Street, London in 1851 and 1853 respectively. In 1851, when the company was based in Mount Street and employed 351 people, they won a prize at the Great Exhibition for a bookcase. By then, after being granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment (United Kingdom) early in the reign of Queen Victoria, they had already taken a leading part in the decoration and furnishing of Osborne House, Sandringham House, Balmoral Castle, Windsor Castle and the apartments of the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House...
