Presenting this exquisite, antique natural Onyx and Pearl mourning brooch.
From the Georgian to the Victorian eras, mourning jewellery was a treasured way to remember the passing of a loved one. Queen Victoria herself, made them even more popular when her Prince Albert passed away in 1861 and she spent the rest of her life wearing black mourning clothes and jewellery.
This beautiful brooch is a perfect example of these times. It is in excellent, antique condition and features natural Onyx set with seed pearls in a starburst motif. The reverse holds a glass panel with plaited hair work underneath. The art of hairwork has died out and so pieces in find condition like this are becoming rarer.
The Onyx stone is beautifully polished with a bezel edge set in 15ct yellow gold. The brooch is secured by a gold pin and C clasp with a solid hinge.
Someone has hand-scratched a name onto the back which looks like ‘Pipi Lang’, I wonder who she was and who she loved?
The Brooch measures approximately 3.9mm long by 3mm wide and it weighs approximately 14.1 grams.
