Victorian Antique Micro Mosaic Brooch 'Doves of Pliny' 15ct Rose Gold c1880s

We are thrilled to offer you some high quality, Micro Mosaic pieces!
This stunning brooch example embodies the Era of the 'Grand Tour' c1880s.
It features the ‘Doves of Pliny’ created in micro pieces of coloured glass inlayed into a black glass base. Each piece is meticulously cut and then hand inlayed into black background. This is truly a dying art and pieces of this quality simply don't come up too often.
The setting tests 15ct Rose Gold (tested not stamped).
The piece is secured by a hinged stickpin and C clasp. Both are in good working order and the pin is slightly bent from previous wear (refer to photos).
This brooch is in fine antique condition with only moderate signs of wear. It measures approximately 4.9cms x 3.9cms and weighs approximately 18.4 grams.
The featured 'Doves of Pliny' are actually part of the 'Capitoline Doves' which were found in a Roman floor mosaic built in the 2nd Century and discovered in 1735 at Hadrian's Villa. The Doves are typical of the types of themes of micro mosaic creations made in Rome in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They were intended for rich visitors on the Grand Tour who wished to bring home a souvenir of their visit to
countries whose ancient civilizations continue to inspire the rest of Europe and America, even today. These earrings are a one-off and can't be repeated.
