Original woodcut printed in black ink on laid paper bearing the “Large Bear” watermark (Meder 89, typically seen in the earliest impressions of this woodcut).  Dated in the block upper center 1511. An early, sharp and brilliant 16th century/lifetime Meder “a” impression, with the full borderline printing clearly.  Catalog: Bartsch 97; Kurth 268; Meder 216.a; Strauss 165; Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 227. 8 3/8 x 8 7/16 inches In excellent condition, trimmed down to he borderline on all four sides. Provenance: ex-collection James Lawrence Claghorn (American, 1817-1884), Philadelphia patron and collector, board member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts whose collection of 20,000 prints was considered a national treasure, bearing his collection stamp [Lugt 555.c] in violet ink verso.
