Nicolas De Largilliere Art

French, 1656-1746
Nicolas de Largilliere (Paris, 1656-1746) Born in Paris, Nicolas de Largilliere spent his childhood in Antwerp. Trained there in the studio of Antoine Goubeau, who taught him the study from nature, Nicolas de Largillierre remained faithful to his precepts throughout his career. In 1673 he went to England where he worked as an assistant in the studio of the portrait painter Peter Lely for almost seven years. He was approved by the Royal Academy upon his return to France in 1683 and was received three years later as "painter of portraits and history"). The portrait is by far the genre that dominates an immense production of nearly 1,500 works produced in a workshop through which many renowned painters will pass. He is with Rigaud the most brilliant portraitist of the end of the XVIIth and the beginning of the XVIIIth century. Rigaud, however, is the official court portraitist, Largillierre works mainly for a wealthy bourgeois clientele. His work brilliantly illustrates the French high society under the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, by an exceptional sense of observation he was able to render, sometimes without complacency, the individuality of the faces and the psychology of the characters.

18th century allegorical painting of The Triumph of Beauty
Located in London, GB
Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1800, no. 93 What was happening in British history painting in around 1800? In recent discussions of the emergence of a British School of history painting following the foundation of the Royal Academy in 1768, this is a question which is rarely posed and one which is not easily answered. Examination of surviving Royal Academy exhibition catalogues reveals a profusion of artists’ names and titles, few of which remain immediately recognizable, whilst endeavours to explain the impact of exhibition culture on painting - such as the 2001 Courtauld show Art on the Line - have tended to focus on the first and second generation of Royal Academician, rather than young or aspiring artists in the early nineteenth century. This makes the discovery and identification of the work under discussion of exceptional importance in making sense of currents in English painting around 1800. Executed by Edward Dayes...

Portrait of an Elegant Lady in a Red Silk Dress, Beautiful Antique Frame c.1720
By Jonathan Richardson the Elder
Located in London, GB
This beautiful portrait was painted circa 1725 and is a fine example of the English eighteenth century portrait style. The artist has chosen to depict the lady against a plain background wearing a simple red silk dress and transparent headdress hanging down the back. The sitter is not shown with jewellery or any other elements to distract the viewer’s attached, thus highlighting the beauty of the young sitter. This restrained manner achieves a sense of understated elegance. The portrait genre was valued particularly highly in English society. Neither landscapes nor allegorical pictures were ever priced so highly at exhibitions and in the trade as depictions of people, from the highest aristocracy to scholars, writers, poets and statesmen. With the rich colouring and lyrical characterisation, these works are representative of the archetypal English portrait and is are very appealing examples of British portraiture...

Portrait of a Young Gentleman - Dutch Old Master 17thC art portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb Dutch Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed as by a follower of Dutch 17th century artist Gerrard van Honthorst. The original of this painting hangs in Wilton House, Wiltshire, home to the 18th Earl and Countess of Pembrokeshire. The painting was previously attributed to Van Dyck by early cataloguers, but after exhaustive comparisons with the two Honthorst brothers' works, it was concluded that Gerrard van Honthorst was the artist who painted the original in Wilton House. Our painting was painted circa 1695 by a follower of Gerrard Honthorst. It was sold to us as circle of Cornelius Johnson. The sitter is Prince Rupert of the Rhine, Duke of Cumberland, Earl of Holderness (1619-1682). He was an English army officer, admiral, scientist, and colonial governor. He first came to prominence as a Royalist cavalry commander during the English Civil War. Rupert was the third son of the German...
