Louis XVI Clocks

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Wall Clock and Matching Barometer with Sèvres Plaques
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A very fine gilt-bronze wall clock and matching barometer with Sèvres Plaques. The dial of the clock signed ‘JULIEN LEROY A PARIS’, the barometer dial signed ‘PASSEMANT AU LOUVRE’. The eight day strike Wall Clock and its matching Barometer, both have a terminal in the form of a pineapple drop with acanthus leaf scroll detail. Above this is a Sèvres panel of a cherub in a garden, rising to a white enamelled dial with Arabic and Roman numerals flanked by cascading relief moulded fruit from a further Sèvres panel of a cherub in flight below a ribbon tied pediment. This companion clock and barometer are fine nineteenth century examples of a pair originally supplied to Madame du Barry in 1769 by the marchand mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier. They were then described as ‘Un Baromètre & Thermomètre, de Passement, montés très richement en bronze dorés d’or moulu et ornés de trois plaques de porcelaine de france à Enfants en miniature cy 10561I.’ It is interesting to note that the original design was made to allow either of three porcelain plaques, depicting putti with astrolabes. Eighteenth century models are now in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. French, Circa 1880. 20th Century Louis XVI Style Museum Pedestal Clock after Jean-Henri Riesener
By Jean-Henri Riesener
Located in Berlin, DE
A Model of Jean Henri Riesener (Received Master in 1768) executed in 1785. (Inv. OA 5501 in Louvre Museum). 19th century. This fine and sumptuous “Regulateur de Pendule” presents a fine amaranth. Of Sycamore oeuil de vermeuil, ebony and buis stringing marquetry. The base and the gaine are decorated with diamond shapes. The hours are inscribed in Roman numerals and the munutes in Arabic. It takes place in a magnificent gilt décor of three winged children playing with garlands on clouds. The regulator is enriched with a delicate garniture of bronze. The dial and each panel are framed by an elegant frieze of palms and pearls. The top of the gaine is enhanced with a frieze of palms and ovums, foliages and garlands of flowers. Each corner is ornated with fleurons. The front of the gaine is embellished by an Apollo mask (Sun Symbol) and each side with laurel crowns. Under the mask the cartouche is decorated by a stylized vase of flowers. Folliated scrolls, flowers, garlands, cornucopias and musical instruments such as a harp (Apollo Reference) The cherubs are underlined by pearls, scrolls of Acanthus Leaves and garlands dawning out in foliages, framed with ropes until the lions feet. The feet rest on a base ornated with fleurons and foliages with buds of flowers ending in four conical feet with acanthus leaves. With André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) and Charles Cressent (1685-1768), Riesener was arguably one of the three greatest French ébénistes of the 18th century. Eventually taking over the workshop after Oeben’s death in 1763, and marrying his widow some four years later. He is renowned for completing the famous bureau du Roi...

The Clock is in a Excellent and Perfect Working Condition, Also it Has Recently
Located in Warsaw, PL
Portico clock signed “Persevalle à Reims” This refined portico clock crafted in transitional Louis XVI – Empire style from ormolu and black marble is signed on the dial “Persevalle à Reims”. The Empire style was based on elements of the Roman Empire and its culture, which had been rediscovered starting in the eighteenth century. Bronze was the main material used in Empire style timepieces and both the patina and ormolu techniques were vastly used for ornamentation during this period. As for the source of inspiration for decorative motifs of Louis XVI style, it was coming from nature and antiquity thus many characteristic elements would reoccur in architecture, interior decoration and furniture. Many ornaments were borrowed from flora, and this love for nature appeared into decoration by the presence of a wreath of roses, baskets, palmettes, bows and ribbons. The portico clock is mainly crafted from black marble and ormolu bronze embellishments, which with their minimalistic touch compliments one another. As mentioned before, the source of inspiration for this portico clock derived from antiquity. The columns which are a key feature of portico clocks are constructed in Greco-Roman architecture. The two front black pillars are made in Tuscan style with gilded capital and base, they are also entwined with an acanthus spiral around the pillar. The back columns, in contrast to the front one, are square and has only a face adorned with a gilded bronze floral garland. The four columns are connected on top with an entablature with a cylinder-shaped dial in the middle cast from bronze. The entablature is adorned on both sides with gilded lyres and flower vases. The dial of the clock is signed ‘Persevalle à Reims’ and consists of blue Breguet-style hands that indicate hours laid out in Roman numerals and minutes in Arabic numerals on the enamel dial. The Breguet hands have a circle with a filled crescent shape on the side and have been featured its founder's watch hands for over two centuries now. This unique shape is sometimes referred to by the French word for apple, pomme. Above the dial is situated a small black marble plinth and a marble medicis vase...
