When you think of the life of Saint John the Baptist (or Baptiste as it is spelled here) then you can only come to the conclusion that in fact he was one of the most important human beings in the history of the world in general and of Christianity in particular. Saint John is sometimes depicted with a lamb to symbolise his recognition of Jesus as the Son of God. When John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan he said 'Behold, the Lamb of God'. In this case the sculptor chose to portray a standing lamb which is a rare feature and this antique was obviously carved in the Baroque Style. This Style is less detailed (or some would say 'more naive') than for example the Renaissance Style, but there are many collectors who love and collect this Style. This is the third in a multi-volume collection providing a visual catalogue record of the decorative arts of the Paris Salons. Included in this volume are reproductions of the catalogue illustrations of furniture at the Exposition Universelle of 1900, the annual Salons du Mobilier, and the celebrated 1903 and 1904 expositions of the Ecole de Nancy in the French capital. This chronological record clearly shows the revolution in furniture design that transpired in France at the turn of the century. The illustrations trace precisely the emergence of the art nouveau style in the 1890s, its high point between the 1900 Exposition Universelle and the 1903 Salons, its demise between 1905-1909, the return to period revivalism and the transitional art nouveau - art deco style of 1910-1912 with the proto - art deco style of the immediate pre-war years (1911-1914). A pair of rare Second World War Carl Zeiss 12 x 60 German ex military binocular director telescope for a 4 m rangefinder. These observation binoculars are mounted onto a new aluminium cradle and gimbal so the whole apparatus can rotate on the vintage adjustable wooden Zeiss tripod. The binoculars are marked 'blc, Beob-F. 12 X 60, fÜr, Em 4m R40, Nr.93, No.239032. They are manufactured by Carl Zeiss with blc being the secret manufacturing code assigned to Zeiss by the German Army Ordnance Department. Adjustment of the interocular distance is by a lever under the left-hand ocular that causes rotation of a circular plate, in which it is eccentrically mounted. It has additional shade settings for the lenses by turning the knob on the left, Farbgläser, bright, medium and dark, the eyepieces can be focused individually. When these WW2 binoculars were in operation connectors for the desiccating apparatus could be fitted on the sides 'Trocken - luft' (dry air).
The optics give outstanding visual clarity. The rubber brow rest (eye rest) can be folded sideways or upwards. Sunshades are fitted that can be flipped into place.
