Leger Cherelle
Des Enfants Traînant Un Chariot Chargé de Fruits

1839

About the Item

A fine oil painting with cherubs and a cart of fruit by French artist Leger Cherelle (1816-1867). Cherelle was born in Versailles, France, and was registered on Rue Guenegaud (Paris) in the 1845 Paris Salon registry. This oil painting, along with another similar one, was exhibited at the Beaux-Arts Salon of 1845 under the titles "Erigone et des Enfants Traînant Un Chariot Chargé de Fruits”. The painting was reviewed in the "Revue de Rouen et de la Normandie: Beaux Arts 1845", vol.13, pg.38, and is translated from French as follows: "Several mythological subjects at the exhibition seem to invite our imagination to return to the ancient ideal. In the first row/of the first calibre, we must place the compositions of Mr. Leger-Cherelle: Erigone and Children dragging a cart loaded with fruit. These two pictures are of a beautiful and strong colour; the fruits that appear there are in high relief and appear succulent. There is no doubt as to the accuracy and correctness of the drawing; but there is, in all these two compositions, a full-scale elegance, a virile grace which completes and supports the powerful effect already gives by the colour. The most serious reproach to Mr. Leger-Cherelle is that he devotes himself so completely to the imitation of certain masters (Delacroix), that he seems to have no other purpose than to emulate him; so that, in all the merit that we can recognize this artist, is unfortunately a large part of borrowing from his Master." Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1839 lower right, and housed in its original giltwood exhibition frame. Dimensions: 12 in H x 18 in W, actual; 19.5 in H x 25 in W x 3 in D, framed. Ref: 787
