About the Item

Antique Victorian 9ct Gold Agate Mourning Brooch This brooch features unusual, lemon coloured, banded Agate which is transparent and very attractive. It is set in 9ct yellow gold (acid tested) with scrolling frame work and beautiful, hand engraved details. In the centre is a compartment containing very tightly woven hair under glass, which actually just looks like a shiny brown stone. This piece has been well loved and obviously very meaningful to the loved one who wore it. It has some damage to 2 of the claws and a small chip to the glass over the hair work (please refer to the photos). It can be worn as a pendant and I think that the hoop to convert it has been added at a later date. The piece is very beautiful and looks amazing when worn on a jacket or between a buttoned collar. The brooch is fitted with simple ‘C’ clasp and a ring to the back and the pin and hinge are strong and work well. The brooch measures approximately 4.7cms long by 3.5cms wide.
