Antique Victorian Solid Carved Ivory Lovers Knot Brooch c1890s in Fitted Box

About the Item

This brooch is unique and rare and full of hidden meaning. The antique piece is carved in solid ivory (pre CITES 1974) with large proportions, it measures approximately 6cms x 4cms (not including the teardrop pendants). The piece comes in a fitted, antique box that is unnamed c1890s. In Victorian days, the open expression of love was frowned upon, so they cleverly found ways to send messages of love to each other via jewellery! The artisan of this piece decided to carve a ‘lovers knot’ from solid ivory to express eternal unity, being bound together in love. The workmanship in the piece is really second to none. There are 3, tear shaped drops that dangle from the brooch. A popular theme in literature was a man declaring his love to a woman with his eyes full of tears. The way to success in love was considered to be paved with tears, because they were thought to reflect the sincerity of the love and feelings from the heart. These teardrops also represent the past, the present and the future which is now bound together by the eternal knot. It’s just such a romantic piece and I only wish it could talk to us! The brooch is secured by a metal pin with C clasp which is all in good order. It is in excellent, antique condition with no damage. We are so delighted to have the piece in our collection of beautiful pieces that we can now offer to you.
