This Pre-Star Wars Space Ship captures the magic, power and volume of unidentified objects that pass through our solar system and within viewing site of spaceship Earth. Titled "Untitled" this piece has the monumental quality and style of a spaceship that has been circling the universe forever. Constructed in 1963, prior to film industry creatives scaring viewers with visions of unimaginable spacecraft come to destroy earth, Julius Schmidt's imagination was unstoppable with his numerous and unique cast bronze sculptures. This extraordinary piece is a heart stopping example of what a genius creative can produce.
It was exhibited in March 9 - 31, 1963 at the Otto Gerson Gallery, New York, NY. A Catalog of the show accompanies this piece.
Julius Schmidt is an American sculptor who earned his B.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1953 and for the next two years studied sculpture under Ossip Zadkine in Paris and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. He returned to Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1955 for his M.F.A. in sculpture. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), Morris Brose (bronze sculptures), Herb Babcock...

Serra describes her artistic vision as “Figurative sculptures depicting contemporary everyday scenes. Reflect my inner world thus expressing moods and desires, feelings, joys and concerns stemming from my relationship with the world".
This wall-mounted iron and bronze sculpture measures 5 inches tall, 9.5 inches wide, and 1 inch deep. This artwork is edition 14 of 18. A certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included. Born in Barcelona in 1973, Mireia Serra's lifelong passion for sculpting was temporarily diverted by her parents' persuasion to pursue a career in fashion design. However, in 1998, she abandoned a lucrative role as a lingerie designer to follow her artistic calling and seek true fulfillment within the realm of fine arts. It was a transformative decision, allowing her to rediscover her true purpose and embark on a creative odyssey that continues to unfold to this day. In some of her present sculptures, the presence of elements from the fashion world such as cameras, texture, and detailed finishing of the clothes, and shoes are apparent.
She graduated in 2002 from the Llotja School of Arts in Barcelona (the same school that took under its wing Antoni Gaudí, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró), specializing in iron and bronze. Later she took an advanced sculpture portrait course taught by sculptor Jorge Egea at MEAM (Museo European d'Art Modern) in order to master her technique.
Working as a full-time sculptor since 2003, Serra started to exhibit with galleries throughout Spain and landed her first solo shows and her first international art fair in Madrid in 2013. Since 2016 Mireia Serra has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs in Germany, Austria, France, Luxembourg, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, and Hong Kong. Her works have been represented by Artspace Warehouse since 2017.

Some of the vessel forms I use (the goddess series) are used to symbolically connect earth to women… a container used for nutrients of survival.
My work also speaks of healing. Pieces are created to capture great depth of emotion, celebration, suffering, and cultural bonding.

An Academic plaster sculpture study from the Marble statue from the East pediment of the Parthenon that showed the miraculous birth of the goddess Athena from the head of her father Zeus. Many of the figures from the central scene are now fragmentary or entirely lost. This figure was carved as an isolated horse’s head. Its ears are flattened back, its jaw gapes, it has flared nostrils and bulging eyes. A portion of the lower jaw and the inner side of the top of the head were cut away. There are dowel holes where the metal bridle was attached. Magnificent Italian Baroque sculpture depicting a mermaid seated on the rock.
All the virtuosity of the sculptor unfolds in this carved group. The fantastic creature is featured seated, the upper part of the body darting forward, the head looking upwards. Sophisticated hairstyle with rows of pearls intertwined in her hair, her loose locks fly in the wind and bring movement to the whole sculpture.
The wide-open eyes with hollowed-out pupils make it possible to follow the mermaid's gaze, towards the sky. The half-open mouth further magnifies this bewitching and seductive attitude.
Its long double tail ending in fins wraps on either side of a rocky mound strewn with objects evoking the underwater world: seashells and shells, branches of coral.
The ornamental richness combined with the great care taken in its execution make it a work in which the splendor of Italian Baroque art unfolds in such characteristic scenic movement.
The composition betrays a strong influence from Filippo Parodi, the leader of Genoese Baroque sculpture, and points to an artist from his circle.
Our sculpture was probably part of a decorative monumental palace.
The iconographic theme evoking the marine world finds its application in the numerous fountains and artificial grottos, designed in Italian palaces at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Giacomo Filippo Parodi (Genoa 1630 – July 22, 1702) was an Italian Baroque sculptor of the Genoese school, who introduced Bernini's aesthetic to Genoa.
